Hot swap SATA bays - 5.25" formfactor

Post by Sovereign »

Do such bay mods exist? I'm sick of not being able to take my movies with me (they're on my desktop's big 750GB drive) when I go home from college. However, I am also cheap and do not want to buy an external. Can I find a 5.25" SATA hotswap bay and an enclosure for a SATA hard drive that doesn't mind being cracked open repeatedly?

Would be cheaper to get an good external drive cage, then you only have to buy one. With the hot swap you have to buy two cages and a tray. Kingwin has a drive/tray set up for a single drive for $20-ish.

The rear of the carrier or the Tagan unit is open and uses the drives connectors to connect to the housing, so when its removed you can use it as a external SATA drive if you have the correct external connectors on your case (power and data).

Or you can get one of these little gems from Asus to connect external SATA devices to your rig, they have both data and power connectors.

Thank you for this thread! I have sort of been looking for a similar deal but for emergencies. I just need to breakdown and buy one encase a tornado/fire/flood hits and i dont have time to unplug and pack the computer i can just take the drive with all my data on it. I will look at getting one of these. Sata II was my big beef since my data drive is sata II, cant be haven no slowness har!

Hmm thanks, I'll keep these things in mind. I haven't checked this thread in a while because my budget precludes purchasing the equipment in the immediate future.
