Well, I did fine with version 2.2.2 until this morning. The software refreshed the projects and went wacky.

It's a good thing that a newer release was out, version 2.3.2a. It works well again. :P

I'm not all that well versed with the software, so if anyone has a few more pointers, maybe I can understand how F@H is working better with monitoring.

Install FAHMON, on the white in the left of the window right click and add client, find the location of your FAH, and set it.

FAH is now monitoring that client, you can add more if you have more than one running. If a WU shows up as unknown, one of the menu bars at the top has a option to update, i think it says something like "get current projects" or something.

All right. I think I got it working. I have a few questions though.

#1 FahMon > Download New Projects <----- What does it do?

#2 Why is my Total PPD currently at 0?

#3 Are there any other settings that I need to fiddle with such as the settings under FahMon > Preferences and any other minor settings at the Menu Bar at the top?

The 'Download New Projects' allows fahmon to get the current info about new WU's from stanford, such as their Wu name, points, total frames etc.

Your PPD is at zero as fahmon has to log and calculate how long it takes to finish a WU, and you haven't done any with fahmon installed yet.

I think all the main settings have been covered, and the preferences left are just non essential your tweaking to your liking.

With FahMon up and running, do Monitoring > Show/Hide FAHLog

Resize the window to your liking.

If you do a Web > My Stats, it will bring you to your Stats listing at Stanford.

Thanks guys. I got two more questions.

#1 I noticed that the PPD resets everytime a new WU gets sent in and when the computer is turned off and on or restarted. Is it suppose to be like that?

#2 I have "Check for Fahmon updates on startup" selected but everytime Fahmon starts, it says "Unable to send request to the server!" Is it fine like that?

I got a quick question about FahMon as well...

I recently installed Ubuntu 7.10 on my system and got FAH up and running the SMP cleint. Went ahead and compiled FahMon (confusing the first time even with matt's great instructions) and got it tracking my SMP client. OK so no problems so far but...

I have a second computer (is running XP) on the same network and I can see the Shared Folder fine so that's where I put FAH. I went to add that folder ("smb://healing-42ee8c7/SharedDocs/FAH") to FahMon on my linux machine and no information is coming up in FahMon. I'm fairly new to linux so any ideas?

Also (just to compound the confusion) is there any way to monitor a different machine across the internet (with permission of course)?

Do you have read/write access to the XP shared folder from the linux PC?

I don't use Ubuntu much, but you may need to install SAMBA client to access windoze shares, and SAMBA Server for windoze to access the linux shares.

An easy way to access the PC(s) from outside is to use DynDNS.
You can then use SHH to access the linux box(s) and something like PC anywhere for the windoze pc(s)

Yes, I can open the log files from the XP machine on the linux machine and I can create files on the XP machine from the linux machine so I think that qualifies as read/write...I'll look into DynDNS and give SAMBA a shot though. Thanks!

Samba must be already installed :)
SMB is the networking protocol *NIX uses to talk to windows.

Haha, it was a question about how to configure FahMon on a linux box to watch a Windows box so still on topic. I was going to start a new thread but I saw this near the top and thought "hey that's perfect!" I guess it's drifted a bit with SAMBA and DynDNS though :-k

@ken - so I need to install SAMBA on the linux machine to access the Shared Folder on the Windows machine with FahMon? or do I need to install something on the Windows machine as well? Sorry for being a bit thick, I'm new to this linux thing...

Those are some good questions. However, I'm not really sure about them.

Answer for question 1 might be, those result go to the File > Benchmark option. Try clicking that to see the WUs that were processed and the PPD listing.

Answer for question two, look at the firewall or network settings that would allow Fahmon to connect.

You'll need the samba client installed to access windows shares.
The server needs to be installed to create and share directories on the linux box with windows.

Once installed, you need to edit the "samba.conf" file to your needs
It's located in /etc/samba.conf and you'll need root privilages to do so.
You can do this via a terminal editor.
Type su nano /etc/samba.conf
Or easier would be su gedit /etc/samba.conf --> This will open "Gedit" to edit the file (easier to use than nano or emacs)
When you have your network details edited, you need to restart the samba server
type su /etc/init.d/samba restart

Then to add users type su smbpasswd -a Username

I don't know enough about Ubuntu, but it's Linux so it can't be too different from SuSe (SuSe has a nice GUI for all this)

:edit:
http://85.214.17.244/gadmintools/index. ... &Itemid=30
You could try install the following package "gsambad"
In a terminal screen type the following
su apt-get update
Then su apt-get install gsambad
Once installed
Type "su gsambad"

You will need to open the samba ports on the windows firewall ---> TCP 445 | 137/tcp & UDP (NetBIOS) | 138/tcp & udp | 139 tcp

I went to the Benchmark option and I saw 4 projects listed. 3 of them were for Legit Reviews while the other was for AnandTech. That is one of the reasons why I don't run SMP, so I can fold for 2 teams. Plus, I doubt I can make the deadline half of the time.

I noticed that the PPD gets reseted to 0 only when the computer is turned on in the first couple of minutes. I'll have this verified whether that is the case by tomorrow morning.

Anyways on Project 2606 I got the following information:

Just now, my PPD was at 0. Now it jumped all the way to 447PPD and I'm positive I don't get that much points! The last WU, it said I was getting 200PPD!
