Safari 3.1 - Thumbs Down!

Post by Tech_Greek »

Safari 3.1 - I saw this huge thread on another site about how it pushed 3.1 on to peoples computer via Apple's Software Update so I decided to give it a try...why not? I cant stand Fire Fox because of some of the issues it has with websites I visit but thinking since it's from Apple it should be at least decent right?

Sort of; in fact I actually did like it, it has a very clean rendering engine that I like (with the smooth font look to it) and things like that which were really cool but I decided to test my browser...not with Acid Test or anything like that...with what you ask? MSDN

Yes, MSDN - MSDN breaks more browsers than I can think exist because of the way the File Manager (for downloads) works on the website and the way they have coded it.

So...booted up the nice new Safari 3.1 and went to MSDN...logged in so far so good right?

NO...look below, went to download Vista and ran into this!

So - overall I give it a three out of five stars...three for the great features, pretty interface, speed...

Two are missing due to the fact it's breaking a LOT of webpages rendering abilitys...something that SHOULD be imperative if you're trying to take good old IE users and make them use your browser...

until Firefox decides to fix the memory leaks, I am actually using Safari. It loads pages much faster for me ,and even after an hour of use, the memory usage is FAR below that of Firefox.

I would love to keep using Safari - it IS fast! BUT with that being said this is a work computer (my personal buisness laptop I guess hehe) so I must have my MSDN downloads avaliable and I'm impatient so having to switch between two different browsers is annoying (the reason I never switched to fire fox).

Most people seem to absolutely love it (they're insane in my opinion), thinks it's OK compared to Firefox, and those who think it is horrible and will never use it again (the Microsoft fanboys).

I can see that people like it because it's clean and simple, and runs well, but i like my browsers a little more complex, like opera, and at least Firefox has plenty of add-ons.

With that said, I'm going to go ahead and put this one right next to IE7 in terms of likability, not to say that IE7 is bad or anything, just not great.
