CPU is in.
popped it into the ASUS board... no POST, no video.
did the usual: try both dvi ports, reset card, try both ports again. checked all connections. reset CMOS. everything is as it should be.
took the CPU and popped it into the Gigabyte mATX board with, hooked up everything to it.
POSTed first go. XP installed without a hitch.
i'm figuring the 7800GT is dead. installing all the drivers for the Gigabyte right now, then popping in the GPU to see if i get anything.
at least i have a working station, even if it is with onboard GFX on this backup board until i can get another video card for the ASUS mobo.
side note: its kinda funny seeing my PC this way with one board still in the case and the other one leeching all the parts.

EDIT*****
7800GT works fine and dandy on the rig outside of the case... theres something up with the ASUS board. when i installed everything today and the intake fan wouldnt even come on, it actually started on one of my last attempts to get things going... thought i'd fixed it, but it just ran and nothing happened. now i'd been installing just the motherboard and 2 top screws werent threading in. i looked for replacement screws but didnt have any of the same type but i had some of the same thread (meant for PCI brackets though) but they fit nonetheless. they're a little wider but they're not hitting any capacitors at all... i think i need to take the board out of the case. sound like a short to anyone?
i cant seem to get a break on this. almost makes me wish i'dve bought a prebuilt system x.x
