i assume if i tried to RMA it, it'd just get turned down?
They will have no way of telling it was OC'ed ;)
think they will be able to tell i put insane volts through mine?
Nope!
The only way they can tell is if they remove the IHS and use a microscope and a laser cutter 8)

Trouble is, your machine still works right? Does it pass stressprime type benchmarks?

Actually they won't know if you overclocked it or there was a motherboard malfunction adding the voltage.

They will refuse to honor the warranty if you lap the cpu, or physically alter it in any way.

When the newegg warranty drops (mostly 30 days) then the manufacturers warranty picks up. Did you register the CPU? If you didn't and still have the receipt, now would be a good time to do it.

CPU is in.
popped it into the ASUS board... no POST, no video.
did the usual: try both dvi ports, reset card, try both ports again. checked all connections. reset CMOS. everything is as it should be.

took the CPU and popped it into the Gigabyte mATX board with, hooked up everything to it.
POSTed first go. XP installed without a hitch.

i'm figuring the 7800GT is dead. installing all the drivers for the Gigabyte right now, then popping in the GPU to see if i get anything.
at least i have a working station, even if it is with onboard GFX on this backup board until i can get another video card for the ASUS mobo.

side note: its kinda funny seeing my PC this way with one board still in the case and the other one leeching all the parts.

EDIT*****

7800GT works fine and dandy on the rig outside of the case... theres something up with the ASUS board. when i installed everything today and the intake fan wouldnt even come on, it actually started on one of my last attempts to get things going... thought i'd fixed it, but it just ran and nothing happened. now i'd been installing just the motherboard and 2 top screws werent threading in. i looked for replacement screws but didnt have any of the same type but i had some of the same thread (meant for PCI brackets though) but they fit nonetheless. they're a little wider but they're not hitting any capacitors at all... i think i need to take the board out of the case. sound like a short to anyone?

i cant seem to get a break on this. almost makes me wish i'dve bought a prebuilt system x.x

If you didn't try that yet, go for it. You know everything works with a different board, so you've pretty much isolated the problem.

well i've taken the ASUS out of the case, plugged a stick of ram, the new CPU, stock hsf, and GPU. connected the dvd rom and a spare HD, plugged the power supply cables in the appropriate places aaaaand...

nada. my board light comes on, but i dont even get any beeping posting sounds when i power on. my cpu fan comes on, but the 120mm fan i have in the PWR_FAN slot won't whir up. i am quite puzzled here. the people at the shop said they plugged another CPU in and everything worked fine. i didnt see any obvious shorts at all when things were IN the case, and now that its out and still not functioning... i'm scratching my head.

my dvd rom lights up, the boards power light comes on, my HSF and video card fans start up, but i get no post codes or anything... wth?

i bet they didnt even try the board, but did try the CPU, just got you to spend more money for labor [-X

i might give up on that board, you have a working system do you not? with all the components you want

no way. i spent $250 on this board and i'm not going to want to settle for this slower chipset because of some setbacks, you know? i think the replacement board ASUS sent me is just acting up or dead somehow... :? i like the overclockability of the ASUS board and i really just want what i paid for (and kept paying for  ) to work...

i'm going to have to get to class here soon. i'm going to try clearing CMOS out of the case and see if that doesnt help things. if i can't get my system back up now i'm going to call the pc shop i went to and politely ask them wtf they did to my working board x.x

edit to martini: yeah i just dont get it. why on earth would my replacement board just crap out?? it worked fine before (and i'm positive my original board was just fine i just didnt know my CPU was dead)

agh! out of curiosity i rechecked the board and all the connections... looked fine to me, so i reset the CMOS and got nothing and then i thought "maybe the board IS shot... maybe all the fan ports are out" so i took the fan i had plugged into the PWR_FAN slot and put it in another one. powered on and still no POST but my fan came on :-k

board shot for real this time?
