Gennum Demonstrates Ground-Breaking HD Solutions for Broadcast and Consumer Applications

Showcases 3Gb/s Video, 12Gb/s SDI, ActiveConnect(TM) HDMI Connectivity
BURLINGTON, Ontario --(Business Wire)-- Apr. 10, 2008 Displaying its expanded portfolio of innovative high-definition (HD) solutions for the consumer and broadcast markets, Gennum Corporation (TSX:GND) will be hosting a series of video transport and consumer connectivity demonstrations at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) conference next week in Las Vegas. Through its ingenuity in designing advanced optical, analog and mixed-signal technologies, Gennum enables high-rate video to be sent and received while maintaining the highest signal quality, ensuring the video transmission remains uncompromised and produces a crystal clear image. With more than 65 percent of real-time, full-bandwidth infrastructure equipment already utilizing Gennum technology, the company's NAB demonstrations will highlight next-generation 3 gigabits per second (Gb/s) video broadcast equipment capabilities and preview HD connectivity technologies that will ultimately reach the consumer market.

The demonstrations will include the industry's first single-chip transmit and receive solutions to support 3Gb/s and the industry's highest speed, highest performance video transport solution capable of transmitting 12Gb/s serial digital interface (SDI) over optical. The company will also demonstrate its ActiveConnect(TM) technology for full-rate HDMI 1.3 consumer connectivity applications, and will introduce an optimized version of the GS2974A, an adaptive cable equalizer featuring improved output jitter and output eye quality.

"In order for broadcasters and consumers to realize the full benefits of HDTV and emerging video formats such as Ultra-high Definition TV and D-Cinema, significant advancements in semiconductor products must be achieved to deliver outstanding video quality at unprecedented, high-speed data rates," said Martin Rofheart, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Gennum's Analog & Mixed-Signal Products. "Our significantly expanded product portfolio and leading-edge demonstrations further underscore our expertise in creating these advanced HD video transport technologies that deliver the required performance our customers need to quickly bring compelling new products to market. Moreover, we are enabling video broadcast and consumer connectivity OEMs to bring a new level of HD video experience to the consumer."

The Gennum demonstrations will show:

-- A complete HD and 3Gb/s SDI transmit solution: Demonstrates full 3Gb/s, HD, SD video and audio processing based on Gennum's single-chip GS2972 3Gb/s SDI solution. The solution features an integrated serializer with voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), audio embedder and cable driver.

-- 3Gb/s SDI serial routing and distribution: Shows the ability to transmit error-free serial signals at 3Gb/s over 140 meters of cable, leveraging the newly optimized Gennum GS2974A solution. The device now features 25% reduced output jitter (from 0.4UI to 0.3UI), significantly increasing system margins. These critical performance improvements allow system designers more jitter margin for easier and more flexible architectures.

-- 3Gb/s SDI optical video transport: Showcasing transmission of 3Gb/s SDI over 10km of single mode fiber using Gennum's dual transmit and receive Video Optical Modules. The compact, pluggable and flexible Video SFP product line features dual channel, single channel and transceiver options, supports multi-rate transmission, and is backwards compatible with HD SDI and SD SDI.

-- Complete HD and 3Gb/s SDI receive solution: Processes full 3Gb/s, HD and SD video and audio. The single-chip solution integrates a deserializer with VCO and an audio de-embedder. This increased integration enables reduced development time and board space, while giving HD designers the ability to future-proof their designs for 3Gb/s transmission.

-- Support for full-rate HDMI 1.3 at distance up to 100 meters: Using Gennum's innovative ActiveConnect connectivity solution, the demonstration will highlight the ability to support full 10.2 Gb/s HDMI 1.3 data rates at distances up to 100 meters, with full support for all DVI and HDMI features.

-- 12Gb/s SDI video transport: Leverages a standard off-the-shelf XFP transceiver that has been modified to include Gennum's 12.5G CDR test chip. The device is capable of variable data rates from 9.9Gb/s to 12.5Gb/s, which enables support for a broad range of standards such as UHDTV, 3D HD, D-Cinema, SONET and 10Gb Ethernet. Additionally, the high bandwidth enables up to eight HD-SDI links or four 3Gb/s-SDI links, creating new possibilities for design of serial routing and distribution equipment.

-- PCI Express repeater with support for PCIe Gen 1 and Gen 2: Shows the world's only PCI Express repeater/retimer, the Gennum GN1406, to combine high-gain equalization and retimer functions to extend the reach of PCIe. Integrating the GN1406, the demonstration shows the ability to support PCIe Gen1 (2.5 Gb/s) and Gen 2 (5.0 Gb/s) applications and demonstrates proven transparent electrical idle and auto-rate negotiation performance. The solution consumes just 100 mW per channel.

12Gb/s SDI Presentation

Discussing industry requirements to migrate to higher bandwidth video, Gareth Heywood, Strategic Technology Manager at Gennum, will be presenting the seminar "11.88Gb/s SDI: Continuing the Evolution of SDI" in the Broadcast Engineering track. The presentation will take place Thursday, April 17, 10:00 - 10:30 a.m., Room S228, Las Vegas Convention Center.
