5.4 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles The Midwest At 4:35am

An earthquake measuring magnitude 5.4 with an epicenter in Southeastern Illinois rattled the Tri-State in the early morning hours Friday. The shaking, which started at about 4:35 a.m. CDT, lasted about 10 seconds. I've been in earthquakes in other cities, but that is the first for here in Missouri! The earthquake happened 3.1 miles down and was centered 128 miles from St. Louis, MO. Could the New Madrid be waking up?
A reporter at the Associated Press building in downtown Indianapolis reported feeling the earthquake as well. Scott Rosenburgh, a former Courier & Press advertising manager now working in a suburb northwest of Chicago, said the quake woke him there.

The map also shows activity with the New Madrid on April 13th, so it looks like something might be shifting a little here in Missouri. Everyone here okay?

That was incredible! I have never been in an earthquake before but I can officially say I that I have now!

I woke up thinking the worst, another domestic dispute between the couple downstairs. The whole place was shaking like it was World War IIII, or I was having a dillusion due to lack of sleep. I walked into the living room where I could feel the air oscillating between the open patio door and my bedroom window. It was as if someone had a giant low frequency subwoofer underneath our building and bumpin it like crazy! Nothing was really moving around, but you could hear things making noise. I have a vibration senstive home theater remote that seemed to be having the time of its life! That when it hit me, we were having an earthquake!

Now that song by Carole King, I feel the earth move under my feet, is stuck in my head...

Thank goodness it's Friday! :partyman:

Far reaching too, i hope everyone is safe also.
WEST SALEM, Ill. (AP) - A strong, 5.4-magnitude earthquake has rattled wide parts of the Midwest.

It was centered in southern Illinois near the town of West Salem, but was felt as far away as Milwaukee, 350 miles to the north. Skyscrapers shook in Chicago's Loop, 240 miles north of the epicenter, and in Indianapolis, 160 miles to the northeast. People in Cincinnati and St. Louis also felt the earth shake.

A resident of Philo, Illinois, south of Champaign, says the house was shaking and the windows were rattling. And he says for central Illinois, it was "a big deal."

There are no reports of any injuries or significant damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey says this morning's quake happened in a region known as the Illinois basin-Ozark dome, which does not usually get quakes. The biggest on record, also a 5.4, happened in 1968.

Only remember one earthquake here in Pennsylvania, cant even remember when it was, just that I was still living at home, so I was a kid.

Yup, woke me out of a dead sleep, made sure the house wasn't falling, then went back to sleep LOL

It woke me up too. I felt the bed swaying (old bed frame) and a handle on Amy's dresser was rattling. My first thought was Amy having a seizure or something (which she's never had before) so I asked if she was okay!... then she walked in from the other room from feeding Kyle and said she thinks we're having an earthquake... I thought 'whew, just a quake'. Then it hit me... and I said, "I think you're right!". I never went back to sleep.

ive been in an itty bitty earthquake before, but only like a jet was low flying or something, so like, sub 2.0, mabie even less than 1.0, more of a minor distraction :? not a "good god we're all gonna die" kinda scenario at all

Our dog woke us up just in time to experience the whole thing!
I've experienced a cpl small ones, this was definitely the biggest I've been in!
They say it was just 10secs. but it seemed alot longer than that!

Wow, anyone have to repair any plaster or drywall today? My grandparents got a huge crack in the celing of their living room after an earthquake in Northeastern Ohio a long time back.

The person who reported the swaying in this article works in my office. It obviously wasn't enough to wake me up from my beauty sleep.

For the record, we felt it here, and we are in Southeastern Ohio.

I did. The USGS has since changed its magnitude to 4.6. It was very quick though. It started with some punch that rattled some monitors here at work, but quickly died off.

The USGS website hasn't reported anything new since the 4.6 aftershock... but here's the time line I've kept track of before the big aftershock square covered some other smaller aftershocks. All quakes were in roughly the same area:
4:37am CDT - 5.2 magnitude
5:03am CDT - 2.5 magnitude
5:15am CDT - 2.5 magnitude
5:46am CDT - 2.2 magnitude
6:55am CDT - 2.6 magnitude
10:14am CDT - 4.6 magnitude

I'm definitely curious if we'll feel any more tremors before the day is over!

When i was in oregon i was in a very very very small one, thought it was my heart and body waking up from a deep sleep when i was in bed. Found out later that day there was indeed an earthquake. As crazy as it sounds i would like to experience being in a real one without the death and destruction and all, just to see what its like. But yes that is crazy to have one there in the mid US. However the largest earthquake ever recorded was just south of there in the early early 1900's. Or something like that. So yeah, if another happens like that, i will unfortunately get my want. LOL :|

Glad to see everyone and all computers are ok though :)

4:37am CDT - 5.2 magnitude
5:03am CDT - 2.5 magnitude

5:46am CDT - 2.2 magnitude
6:55am CDT - 2.6 magnitude

10:05pm CDT - 2.7 magnitude

Just another little aftershock at 10:05pm that was a 2.7 magnitude. Seven rumbles all together and nothing in nearly 12 hours... Let's just hope the big fault line here in Missouri doesn't have to adjust to all that movement! I do have Earthquake insurance though, which is unlike many I asked that don't.

We had a 5.2 in England at the end of February (at 1am one night). Its epicentre was ~50 miles away from us. Lasted about 10 seconds, got woke up and was like, what the hell is going on, and I just about realised it was a quake and it was over.

The aftershock was pathetic at 1.8 at about 4.00am (I didn't feel that one).

Seems to be a 'good' year for rare quakes.

The New Madrid Fault in southeast Missouri did have a very small 1.7 magnitude adjustment it made Saturday at 6:19 PM. The epicenter was 3 miles NW from Marston, MO.
