They work well, give better memory performance, but are too old and give out way too much heat for my liking.FZ1 wrote:LOL. So how do you feel about using NVIDIA chipsets w/ intel CPU'skenc51 wrote:All I have to say is

I've used both and have found Intel Chip sets are more stable also!
I've also heard conflicting reports that they won't support the new 45nm chips.
I can post and run a 1M SuperPi run with a FSB of 575MHz which ain't too shabby......try that on an NV chip!
I'm now running 400 x 9 (3.6GHz) and the RAM on the 266MHz ref freq @ 1GHz 4-4-4-5 2T (2:3 ratio) and very tight sub timings.
I need to test if this is faster than DDR800 3-3-3-8 on the 333 ref feq (1:1 ratio)
I also need to test 1200MHz 5-4-4-12 on the 266 ref freq (2:3 ratio)
If I was getting a new board, I'd get the Asus P5K Premium.

Re: Lets make a list and check it twice.
I like the maximus for it's X38 chip set, but it costs way too much, Overclocking and stability would be compairable with the P5K, except there are still minor tweaks required in the X38/48 bios.FZ1 wrote:P35? The X38 / 48 chips work best with DDR3 not DDR2. P35 is best for DDR2 IMO.
Trust me, I've being reading ALOT on these boards, I was even thinking of moving my P5K to the backup / speare rig and getting a Maximus board, so I do know a bit about this subject ;)
What I do like with the Maximus board is the 2 phase voltage supply for the RAM. Most people find they need less vdimm to OC.
Re: Lets make a list and check it twice.

I am finally going to get this build going. My mandatory gov. loan will be covering the build. I am looking at a MoBo, Processor, Ram, Cooler, and Case.
I am reusing my Hard drive, 8800GT, and PSU.
Are E6750s still good for the price? I really want to keep the processor sub $200, and the MoBo sub $150. If I can get an SLI board for less than $150 I will be extremely happy so I can upgrade to 2 GTs sometime down the road. I would also like the option of an unlocked BIOS just incase I decide to dabble in the overclocks.
So, I like the E6750, Antec 900 case, 2 gigs of 1066 RAM, and probably a zalman cooler.

$199 for an E8400 would get my vote.
Or a lower E8XXX if you want to save a bit of money.

I agree, the E8400 is a clear winner. Runs fast and cool and overclocks like mad. Whats not to like?

Re: Lets make a list and check it twice.
Cool, I may go lower than the E8400, didnt want to spend $200.
Newegg has an open box E8400 for $169. Anyone ever bought an open box processor?

Re: Lets make a list and check it twice.
Hmm, I wouldn't trust it, as the original user could have either a) found that it is a pathetic overclocker, or b) overclocked it with such high volts that it killed the max overclock and it now only runs close to stable.
Of course these are worse case situations (it could just be that someone bought it and the mobo didn't support it), but you never know what was done to it.

Alright, I will steer clear.
I am still up in the air about the Motherboard. I have never bought one before, and I don't really know what to look for. I know I want DDR2, 775 intel chipset, SLI compatable (I could live without this). There are just so many manufacturers and options that I don't know what to do. Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Lets make a list and check it twice.
Not too many as you are looking at a 780i motherboard or something more affordable like the 750i? Nothing wrong with buying OEM/Tray processors, you just get a shorter warranty and no heat sink. When I buy CPU's for personal use I always buy tray/OEM processors if I can and then open-box as sometimes people buy the wrong CPU, can't afford it, or it didn't overclock well and returned it.
The best bang for your buck if you are open to the "Open Box" items at newegg is this
- ASUS P5N-D LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 813131232R
New this board goes for $146.99, so $89.99 seems like a great price. It will support DDR2, SLI and is a full size ATX board... to top it off it's an ASUS, which is good for resale value. If you buy the open box E8400 for $169 and ASUS P5N-D for $89 you'll be spending $258 + shipping... not bad!

Open box and OEM motherboards aren't going to have all of the sata cables and such are they?
I am just weary of what other people are capable of doing to computer hardware.

Re: Lets make a list and check it twice.
usually they are missing the manual and some cables.. I got a box of at least 100 SATA cables, so if you ever need one let me know.

Re: Lets make a list and check it twice.
Wow, how the hell did you get a box of 100 sata cables??
Anyway, here is the board I like so far. Lots of room to upgrade when prices drop on DDR3
ASUS P5KC
Processor: Q6600 I might as well pay $15 more for a quad over dual cores.
Ram: Patriot Extreme Performance 2GB
Cooler: Any ideas for a Q6600?
Case: Coolermaster Elite 330 will do for now. I just realized how expensive the antec 900 is... Definately don't want to spend that much on the case.
OS: Vista Premium 64bit. This is the same price as the 32bit, so why not go 64 eh?
I still have the HDDs, GPU, Optical Drive, and PSU from the previous build, so I think this is about all I need.

Once you go DX10, you don't want to go back.
I really don't want to get the 32bit version now, and then regret it when I want 4 gigs of ram. Computer building is sooooo hard! (and I haven't even started putting it together yet!)

Re: Lets make a list and check it twice.
I have five systems running 64-bit Vista and haven't had a single problem with drivers yet other than my printer, but that was well over a year ago and Epson came out with 64-bit drivers... I see no reason why not to go 64-bit... In many applications 64-bit is faster as seen in our CPU reviews...martini161 wrote:there are several reasons not to go 64bit. 1: Imagine the worst driver issues youve ever had, now multiply it by 666 2. Re: Lets make a list and check it twice.
I would much rather have 64bit and not have to buy a copy of windows again when I want more ram. I intend to make the move to DDR3 when it is less expensive, and 4 gigs of DDR3 looks really nice!
Any idea what kind of cooler I would want to look at for the Q6600? Would the stock cooler be ok if I weren't overclocking right away?
