No internet but msn works.

Post by DMB2000uk »

My friend is stuck with a predicament, his internet has stopped working (can't connect to anything in both IE and Firefox, so shouldn't be a browser setting) but he can still access msn; so the connection is not totally dead. Makes me wonder if it is just a port 80 problem.

Pinging external IP's from the router diagnostics page works ok.
Pinging from the cmd returns could not find host errors (i think we tried pinging a site name rather than an ip address there).

Have also tried in the cmd: telnet google.com 80
and apparently (is it a vista thing?) " 'telnet' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. "

DNS is set up on the router and has been assigned to the network adaptor ok (in this case it is wireless, but using wired does not act any different).

Rebuilding the TCP/IP stack (with netsh int ip reset c:\tcpiprebuild.log ) also doesn't help, it said everything was ok, and i couldn't find the logfile afterwards, so i don't think it errored.

The problem is apparent on both a Vista desktop and an XP laptop (an EEE PC to be exact :P) so is not limited to one machine.

Short of calling the ISP i'm lost for ideas. Anyone with some better understanding of networking have an idea as to what is going on?

When you said you can ping external IP's from the router, have you tried to ping a domain name?
The ISP's name servers could be down.

Try manually specifying another DNS server on the network connection

Dan,

Im guessing that everything was rebooted ? router, cable modem, systems? Does your friend have a firewall or proxy server or anything else besides the router installed?

also, telnet is available in vista but turned off by default....control panel > programs > turn windows features on or off > tick off the box for telnet client

Yeah, everything has been rebooted. The router is an ADSL modem router combo.

Not tried turning off his firewall on the router, but I think he tried port forwarding everything on the firewall to his machine, and if he did it, it still didn't work.

Will take these suggestions back to him if the problem still persists.

He rang up the ISP and there was a pre-recorded message apologising for the problems, it didn't say what they were but that they were working on fixing them.

Would have been interesting to know if it was the DNS servers, but his internet is back up now so can't try it to see if it was that.
