Maybe I shouldn't complain
but could anyone explain this logic to me?
I've been working on an HP LaserJet 4100DTN that was giving 51.x errors and print was all mangled. The HP error code indicates that the laser assembly is faulty. So I ordered the assembly and installed it. I printed over 1000 pages since the installation with perfect quality and no error codes. I have banged the printer around and done everything I can think of that a normal user would do and have had no problems.
Why am I complaining, you ask?
My boss just came in and asked about the printer. I told him it was fixed and printing like mint. Does he say, "Good job, Jack! Now I can return it to the customer"? No.
He says, "OK, put the old assembly back in and see if the print error happens again."
Am I missing something here? It's almost a textbook repair but that's not good enough?!? It's not like I have nothing else to work on since he dropped off 6 more machines for me just after telling me this.
Arrrrrgggggghhhhhhhh!

Tell him you tried that already, or that you've done it since he asked.

Or freeze some dog poo, then shave it down very finely and put it in the vents of his monitor. His office will never be the same again

That's just evil lol.
Re: Maybe I shouldn't complain
Wait, you fixed it, and he wants you to break it again? Shouldn't you just bill the customer for the parts and labor and be done with it?

Nope, but you can find all kinds of doggie poo down at Cazenovia Park by Mercy Hospital in south Buffalo.
I use to walk my dog down there while living in West Seneca.
Does your boss drink coffee? Add a few shavings to the coffee mix before it brews. LOL

Yeah, but they got caught!! Don't forget, I'm a "poo ninja"!! Of course, I wouldn't really do that to him but it's fun to pretend sometimes.Remember all of those people who have been sued for pissing in coffee or soup?
Stev, for copious amounts of dog poo, I have only to go to my back yard! Our mutt is a beagle/chow mix that weighs <40 lbs and I swear the back yard looks like a cow lives there. It's a part-time job just keeping it cleaned up.

Re: Maybe I shouldn't complain
Well, I must admit, I'm glad I didn't go the dog poo route. My boss finally explained the method behind his madness so I feel a tad sheepish.
This client is a state prison and my boss knows quite a few people who work there along with several relatives who are guards (and at least one inmate who is associated with our largest client , long story)
Because of his contacts there he doesn't want to look bad. He'd done one job for them prior to my coming to work for him. Like this one, it appeared to be a slam dunk repair. He thought it was fixed after testing it nonstop for nearly 3 days so he delivered it back to the office. A week later it started doing the same thing again and he had to do a gratis rework which caused him to eat about $400 including mileage and lost jobs when the actual problem was something entirely different from what all the indicators pointed to.
He had me put the old assembly back in and after 2000+ test pages, it's still working flawlessly . He's really upset because we don't know what the problem is and he doesn't want to have another rework and possibly lose the client completely.
Just wish he'd explained that to me to start with though.

Re: Maybe I shouldn't complain
If it's a Laser and there's a print sharing switch or device involved those can jack up a Laser pretty easy. Some Lasers network shared can just stop printing and stand alone they print great, put them back to the network and they don't print.
Never have figured the issue out but I've seen it on 4 or 5 Lasers. Unplugging them (from the wall and network) over night helps some times.
