F@H crashes

Post by InspectahACE »

Hey guys, I entered the folding arena over the weekend but I noticed something amiss when I run Folding@Home. I've noticed that When I leave it on thru the night(or a long period of time), and when I check up on the progress, F@H has crashed and stopped working..happens everytime..sometimes it will finish bout 4 WU's or just 1. I just started to use the program so I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or maybe I got a bum copy (which i DL'd from the F@H website) I'm running Vista Ultimate so I don't think that would be an issue but who knows these days

Are you running SMP client or using your graphics card to fold?

anyone who is running smp i would recommend setting up a loopback adapter, because anytime your network crashes it will crash the client. ill try to get a link to a tut to set one up a little latter

I am assuming the SMP one...I am sure that it is using up my cpu core so yea lol. Tried the GPU one but it had a weird warning saying the beta testing or whatever had ended and could not use it..Like I said..I extremely new to this..funny thing is..I left it on at home while at work and I just checked it....it's still running..so who knows lol..on the flip side..I believe i've completed about 11 WU's since I've started..thats a total count by the way..When I got hom today it said 7..and the other time I ran it over night it said 5 completed..so not too bad i think

ditch the SMP, find a way to get the GPU working. The 8800GTX will put out 4500-5000 ppd. my E6600 overclocked to 3.2Ghz is only good for 1800-1900ppd.

Maybe someone will see this and post up a good link to the GPU2 download. If not, I'll find it after dinner and work tonight.

Ok got the gpu client running..guess its running a test WU...least thats what its showin as "test protein A" doesnt show my name on it yet..so who knows lol..i will let it run at least..I did put my name and LR's team number in..but nothin shows yet..It's running tho...I also noticed F@H's forum looks eerily like LR's in a way too..(not that it mattered lol)

I do have one more question though...When I have F@H running in the background..the display window stops to like 1 iter/sec...but when I bring the display window up, it shoots back up to 60 iter/sec..and when I even leave the window on top of everything else but don't move the mouse..it goes back down to 1..but when I move the mouse, it shoots back up as well...any ideas on why or if im doing something wrong?

The display window is currently broken in the beta of the GPU2 folding, so you shouldn't worry about leaving it open. In fact leaving it open is probably hindering the folding (as it is trying to run the 3d app as well as folding).

If the GPU folding icon is in your system tray it will be working away. You can hover the mouse over it and it will tell you the current status of the folding (i.e. frame XX/YY).

If you want to know how long it has been taking to complete the steps, you can open the log (right click the tray icon) and see the timestamps and work out the difference between the steps.

Not sure if im reading the log right..But I did notice that my cpu is barely being used...(from what the cpu monitor in vista is showing..could be wrong i think) it shoots upt to 50% or more when the display window is up..but way down on the cpu cores without it..(F@H is in the tray now)...Also when I highlight the system tray icon..it just says "Results successfully sent"...i hate being a n00b sometimes..

Well maybe it isn't actually doing anything right now and is waiting for the results server to give it some more work, the servers could be very busy so it can't get any right now (it will keep trying though), or you could have just moused over it in-between WUs.

If you are worried that something still isn't right, you can post your log on here and we will have a look at it for you.

The 3D window will be increasing the CPU load as it is actually just running the pretty demo protein, but it isn't actually doing any work towards folding when it is just showing that.

Re: F@H crashes

Good job you posted this as it appears that it is actually erroring lots.

You should try uninstalling it and reinstalling the latest version from:
http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegrou ... -612b8.msi

What graphics drivers are you running by the way? Just check that they are above 174.55.
(they need to support CUDA, and the CUDA drivers are here, use the beta 2 if there is more than one choice for your OS)

Yeah it does support it, let us know how you get on and if you still don't seem to be getting any points then post back with your new log (and I'll let matt have a look at it :P)

SO far so good...Sorry for long reply..MY dog just died a lil bit ago..The last 3 days have been horrendous with him..Seizures off and on since Saturday night..I went up to pick him up and he had 2 more before i got there and he was in bad shape when i saw him..so I decided to have the doc help him on his way. Still feels like the wrong decision but he's no longer feeling pain..But the F@H is working great so far..I really do appreciate the help on the F@H guys.. all of ya..I thank you all for the help..I now have another reason to run this.
