yeah, i agree with you, vicaphit, steam has plenty of issues that need to be worked out with the updating service, but I got mine updated now, so im happy for the time being.
good luck to you too, pray for no updates!
what's up with steam?
Re: what's up with steam?
I always turn off the internet before loading steam, so no updates for me.
I did, however, accidently leave the internet running and loaded steam. It started updating and I killed my internet connection real quick and it never successfully started the update.

Re: what's up with steam?
I guess I'm lucky in not having any serious issues with Steam since I used it for the initial HL2 release. I currently have about 16 Steam games loaded and have changed PCs several times since.
I backup my Steam games (File -> Backup games) after every new purchase is 100% downloaded and has been launched and closed once. I have never had to re-download any games. I don't do multi-player much so I basically download the game overnight or in the background (sometimes restarting the download is necessary) and when 100% done I launch and close (while Steam is online) to verify it works then go offline (File - Go Offline) and then backup the game. I have Steam set to startup by default in offline mode and I only go online once a month or so to check the Steam store and catch any updates, this sometimes takes a while so I usually let it run overnight. Once the updates are done I go back into offline mode and all is peachy.
The initial launch of Steam was pretty buggy but I must admit to liking the distribution method more these days. No CDs to deal with and a bit of the "slightly delayed" instant gratification thang goin' on

Re: what's up with steam?
Yeah, i do like the new distribution method, but it's a tad annoying with 3kb/s download speed, and i just found a freebie that came with my HIS Card - free Black Box
(why on earth did i get portal separate?!?)
so i obviously am not gonna download this at my house, UPDATES take long enough, so are games saved only in the Program Files folder, or is there some other data I also need to copy if i were to download HL2 somewhere else?
