GPU2 Folding - GTX 260 Versus GeForce 9600 GT

Post by Apoptosis »

I started out folding in the 'War' with a 9600 GT and I ran it for over 24 hours to see how it does... Not bad for what it is to be honest.

The GeForce 9600 GT can be seen above folding before i took it out of the system for a GeForce GTX 260 as I wanted some more folding power. The GeForce 9600 GT with 177.35 drivers and the latest GPU2 client was running at ~1800 iter/sec on 576 P5005_supe

I installed the GTX 260 this morning and after getting the drivers re-installed the card is up and folding for the competition. The performance went from ~1800 iter/sec on the 9600GT to 2800 iter/sec on the GTX 260.

I looked into the Folding Log and did some quick math to come up with this:

Looks like the GeForce GTX 260 is folding about 65% faster than the GeForce 9600 GT! Not too shabby at all.

Well, the GeForce GTX 260 folds 65% faster than a GeForce 9600 GT... Now that we know by how much let's see how overclocking impacts the GeForce GTX 260...

The stock settings on the XFX GeForce GTX 260 are 576MHz on the core, 999MHz on the memory and 1242MHz on the shaders. I was able to use the EVGA Precision v1.2.0 software utility and overclock the card up to 666Mhz on the core, 1100MHz on the memory and 1525Mhz on the shaders. The 283Mhz increase on the shaders should give the card a nice boost. I ran some quick numbers to check out the overclock and what it did for folding performance. The card has more left in it, but I figured this was a good starting point and 100% stable.

This time testing was done while folding work unit p5214_supervillin_e1.

As you can see I got another 13% increase in folding performance! Not too shabby!

Check out how it does on my other system compared to the GTX260 at both stock and overclocked settings...

I'm running higher shaders on my 8800GTX, but I can't even compete with the core and memory clocks.

This is my log on a P5214, with Core/Memory/Shader at 630/990/1560.

Code: Select all

[23:17:46] Project: 5214 (Run 1, Clone 26, Gen 8)
[23:17:46]
[23:17:46] Assembly optimizations on if available.
[23:17:46] Entering M.D.
[23:17:53] Working on p5214_supervillin_e1
[23:17:53] Client config found, loading data.
[23:17:53] Starting GUI Server
[23:19:15] Completed 1%
[23:20:37] Completed 2%
[23:21:59] Completed 3%
[23:23:21] Completed 4%
[23:24:43] Completed 5%
[23:26:05] Completed 6%
[23:27:27] Completed 7%
[23:28:49] Completed 8%
[23:30:11] Completed 9%
[23:31:33] Completed 10%
where should I try to tweak more to get the most boost? I can probably get a little more out of it, I just found a comfortable spot and stopped there (actually fell asleep while tweaking it).
