Wow, that's pretty nasty to hear how badly that stuff got ya. I guess individual physiology plays a significant role in if & how badly you can get addicted to this stuff.
My one bad vice is I gotta have the fizzy stuff, got so bad I was able to eventually grow to like diet soda when I switched. (I don't drink & don't do coffee, so soda is a vice I keep) I work to drink more juices these days especially in the morning, but I still drink more diet soda than is healthy I'm sure. Going cold turkey on caffeine doesn't give me half the problems everyone else seems to be mentioning, I just stay pretty tired the next morning or two until I can shrug it off by midday, then I'm fine for the rest of the day and a few days after that it doesn't affect me.
While it is extremely hard to find, one thing I've noticed while visiting the Houston area is they have the largest selection of groceries I've ever seen. No where else have I found Diet Caffeine Free soda for every single brand (including Dr Pepper) in 2-litre bottles! They even have non-diet, caffeine free in 2-litres... same goes for Pepsi stuff. For $1 each they're much cheaper than buying cans and more cans... for most of this year I've been slowly taking caffeine out of my diet, and simply buying soda without it was the hardest part to do because it is so hard to find in anything but cans, if you could even find those! I can taste the difference between caffeine and caffeine free sodas, believe it or not it really does change the taste without the caffeine in there...
I avoid energy drinks though, most of them are the equivalent of using pharmecutical drugs to "pick you up" and get you awake... I don't need to be doing that to my body, and I'm sure we'll soon be seeing the effects of some of the nastier energy drink concoctions soon enough.
For those looking to avoid caffeine, be aware some flavors of Ben & Jerry's and Haagen-Dazs ice cream have more caffeine in them than a can of Mountain Dew.

Excedrin also comes with caffeine, the Extra Strength Excedrin has as much caffeine as 2.5 cans of Mountain Dew. Anacin is another pain reliver that also has caffeine in it. Even some root beers like Barq's have significant levels of caffeine in them.
