Re: will i be able to run the ati radeon 4850hd
I'm guessing you made a typo and have a 350 watt power supply...
It will be close as with those older power supplies the Amps on the +12V rail is usually not enough. You can try it out and see what happens, but if you do feel around the power connectors on the motherboard that go to the PSU (the 20-pin) as they often get hot if the power draw is too much, just like an overloaded extension cord. If it's getting how or the PC crashes during full GPU load (gaming) then you know for certain that you need a new PSU.
I do know and have seen a Radeon HD 4850 run on a 350W power supply, so yes it is possible.

I am thinking it is a 305 watt, my dell came with a stock 305W.
If I were you, I would save my money and buy something that isn't going to be so bogged down by the P4 processor.

Re: will i be able to run the ati radeon 4850hd
sorry but its not a typo and its is a 305 is the motherboard still good cause i cant find much i formation on it.it was built 4 the dell 8300 demension
Re: will i be able to run the ati radeon 4850hd
just an FYI, the 12V+ rails are 18A each. all dell PSUs are exactly the same, and they can handle an 8800GT 512, but i don't know how much the 4850 uses compared to that

well what is your current graphics situation, do you already have a card, or are you running integrated?

Re: will i be able to run the ati radeon 4850hd
i would presonally recomend saving up somemore money and building a new system from the ground up. your going to be bottlenecked by you procesor, and to upgrade that chances are youll have to upgrade your motherboard, and with that chances are youll have to upgrade your psu, etc

yea i suppose ill start now thanks
Re: will i be able to run the ati radeon 4850hd
The 4850 uses about 30w more than the 8800GT at load, so if it will be pretty risky to try a 4850 on that PSU, which is a shame as it means that the upgrade can't be stepped over a few components.skierkid450 wrote:just an FYI, the 12V+ rails are 18A each. all dell PSUs are exactly the same, and they can handle an 8800GT 512, but i don't know how much the 4850 uses compared to that

Not a PSU expert but you might look at this:
http://www.power-on.com/ea460u.html Never used them so not sure of quality.
Although the way I would go I think would be one of these since at least I've heard of PC Power and Coooling
http://www.pcpower.com/Dell/Dimension/D ... -8300.html
That said, if you can wait and save a bit you can build quite a decent rig for not much cash these days.
EDIT - I believe the first one is a Fortron PSU BTW
