Guide For Price/Performance Folding Rig

Post by martini161 »

TIER 1: ~500
This is a wish list that i made up last night when i couldnt sleep. it'll get you about 7.5 or so PPD for around $530 after MIRs (no OS, No case). You can also add to it and make a slightly more productive rig, but i made this list with someone who wanted to get a quick folding dedicated Rig for the next war.
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Publi ... er=8924326
Q6600
Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
Gigabyte GA-P35-SG3 P35 Mobo
OCZ 2X1GB DDRII-800 Ram
80GB SATA HD
COARSIAR 650TX
9600GSO 384MB
TIER 2:~600
$30 ... Gigabyte GZ-X5BPD-500 Case
$80 ... PCPower & Cooling Silencer 500 PSU
$65 ... ECS NF650iSLIT-A Mobo ($15 MIR)
$120... Intel E7200 (could go cheaper, but no need in crippling the rig from other uses)
$50 ... OCZ Platinum 2GB DDR2 800 ($30 MIR)
$40 ... 80GB Seagate 7200.10 Hard Drive
$280... KFA2 Galaxy 9600 GSO x2 ($20 MIR each... have to play the rebate game)
$28 ... Samsung DVD Burner SH-S203N
= ~9K PPD
$693 + $40 shipping to my house = $733. $85 in rebates (get a friend to do the second video card)...

$648, and that includes a case and shipping that you didn't account for. Drop the case's $30, and you save $20 on shipping... or $598 total.
more to come

and only 7.5k ppd? why not go with an SLI board, 2 video cards, 2 GPU clients? 2 8800GTs would be good for about 9-10k ppd with even a mid level dual core processor. If you wanna go with the quad and add an SMP, that only sweetens the ppd, but in my opinion, starts to complicate things too much. But of course, my opinion is subject to change very soon as I get my Q folding to it's full potential.

Also added a DVD drive... I'm comfortable running my machine without one (network install everything after OS), but I'm wouldn't build a machine for anyone else without one.

I did get rid of the CPU cooler, as with the GPU's folding there is no real need to overclock beyond the limit of the stock cooler.

my 8800gt sticks around 4700 ppd, with some units up to 5200. I'm fully expecting 9500-10000 ppd out of the pair of them in SLI with an E6600 and 2GB ram.

that's odd. I had the 8800gt's. oh well, prices are right. The 9600GSO's are cheaper yet.

no worries. I just thought since that's basically what I'm building right now, I'd kick in my input. I already had the most of the parts for the SLI build, so I was thinking of doing another if this one is successful. Gotta do SOMETHING to catch Darkstar before 2015. :)
