GPU temps WAYYYYYY up after new drivers

Post by KnightRid »

I installed the new drivers from Nvidia - 177.83 - and my temps are WAY up running the gpu folding@home. ANyone else notice this? Now I do have mine overclocked, but the temps would normally be between 60 and 64. Now they are at 68 as I type with my fan running at 100%! I am glad I have rivatuner installed or it would have probably burnt up running at the low speeds the fan is normally at.

So is it just me?

Mike

This is on my 8800GT, btw.

Maybe the new drivers cause the GPU to work harder. Say before it was only running 75% load, now it's 90% load. 68C isn't that hot though. When I play CoD4, my X850XT goes up to like 75C with the fan at 60%.

Btw, isn't 100% loud?! I swear people say it's like a high pitched whine or something.

how can you stand listening to you x850XT at 60% ??? mine at 30% is the breaking point of unbearably loud(and it goes to 18% from 5% when it hits 90C, so it hovers at 90)

Cus I'm pro like that =). Lol well my desktop is by the table, that's like enclosed by the desk (no door). I dunno, can't really describe it. I could take a pic if you want . I used RivaTuner to make it idle at around 23%, 40% when it's over 60C, and 60% when it's past 75C. 60% is loud, but it's better than having the card overheat and die an early death.

or you could take a pic to see where the fan is, i know mines loud because the fan is RIGHT next to the vent->out of the case

Have the new drivers increased the speed of folding? Are the new drivers stable? Is your rig overheating?

From other forums I've been checking out these offer no improvement over the 177.35's. Since you're having temp issues I would roll back to those.

Is it ever loud! sounds like one of those cars kids like to drive that sound like weed whackers, only this is REAL high pitched!

75C at 60% fan would be good, but I am running at 100% fan and this puppy is at 69C now. For folding I would like it around 65 at the high end, just for my own brain to think it isnt hurting the gpu too much running it 100% all the time.

I tried turning the PhysX off and that didnt help, tried going back to stock settings, that lowered the temps by 2C at the most.

Is the folding app included in the Nvidia pack a differnet one thatn from the folding site itself? Maybe i will try that one and see what happens before rolling back to the previous drivers.

Mike

Hope my fan doesnt die :| Now these temps are a reason to see if water cooling would bring me down to no more than 60C, then it might be wirthwhile to invest in it, for me anyway.

Watercooling would be quite a bit under 60oC ;-)
