Got the Windows Me blues oh yeah

Post by unfaithfulsfan »

I've been trying to image a drive with Me on it. Acronis wouldn't start on Me due to some inexplicable driver issue and I only have one IDE port on my tech computer so I had to use Ghost Corporate Edition.

Long story short, that didn't work.

So I tried using acronis to back the entire original drive up to my PC then restored it to the new drive. It won't boot. Searches forever for the IDE drives then once it finds them, it say "Primary Hard Drive Failed" I checked in BIOS the drive is there but once I look at the drive, it disappears.

I put the original drive back in and get the same thing.

WTF happened? Did the MBR get trashed in the rounds of using Ghost?

I'm fargin' clueless here and I really don't want to have to explain this one to my already incredibly bitchy boss.

Thanks,
Jack

MBR's can be fixed.. :P
(recovery console)

But I don't know if that would be the cause of the drive being sporadicly there.

Have you tried putting the hard drive in another system to check that it's OK and the files aren't corrupt?

Try that and if it's not the files themselves then you can probably fix the MBR though I wouldn't know how in ME...

I know the drive is OK. It was just a routine upgrade and I know also the customer's data is still intact. Like you, I'm stuck with rebuilding the MBR with Me. The biggest problem is that I can't even boot to a startup floppy. It never gets to that point. It just gives me the failed message and stops.

Guess I'll just have to get yelled at. Again. Crap. The Friday Night Fights start a few hours early.

Fight averted!

After all the wailing moaning and gnashing of teeth, it turns out the primary IDE channel is foobar. Hallelujah, hail Mary, amen!

Glad you were able to pin the problem on an actual fault so the blame couldn't lie with you. :)

Have a good weekend.

Unfortunately, Windows ME is the problem. I don't think even Microsoft wants to admit they made that sorry excuse of an operating system.
