Finally Graphics card is a reality!!!

Post by unfaithfulsfan »

OK so the quandary remains and needs to be resolved.

My maw-in-law gave me $100 for my birthday and I said "NOW is the time" cause I ain't gonna have a free $100 for a while. :supz:

So i'm looking between an 8800GT or a 9600GT
As you all know about me, I'm not a rabid gamer but would like to be able to play NFS Pro Street and GRiD and probably some FPSs--WWII sims, etc. So, my friends, what would you recommend for the ~$100 Range:
1)http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814133232 PNY 8800GT for $109
2)http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130360 EVGA 9600GT for $109
[BTW, on this card, what is the fundamental difference between the "N860" vs "N861"? In the listed specs I don't see anything that just leaps out at me. Is one just an older version?] :-k

Also, it doesn't really matter about the dual slot config. I currently have nothing in my regular PCI slots anyway. So, without any further ado, lemme have it! What do y'all think?

Thanks
Jack

have you looked at this 9800GT for $125, but its $10 off for promo code EMCBAACBD and $15 off for MIR and free shipping, so end up at $99

Go for the 8800GT (or 9800GT suggested, they are the same card).

On the flip side, the dual slot cooler on the 9600GT will no doubt run cooler and quieter than the one slot on the 8800GT.

Hmmmm, promo code didn't work. Also, a little afraid of it since there are no reviews on it yet. I've heard MSI makes great cards and I trust your recommendation but still just a little leery of it.

Hmmmm, jackie like-ee...I can't believe the 9800 dropped in price that quickly so I hadn't even considered it.

I'm also leaning towards Dan's suggestion over the dual-slot running cooler and quieter. Even though I got boned on the Antec rebate (as of the mail coming this morning sans check anyway) the case I got is incredibly quiet. I seriously have to look at the lights to make sure it's on even with the fans running at 100%. I've kinda gotten spoiled by that sound of silence.

So, in conclusion, I think my head is going to explode...... :yikes: I'll sleep on it one more night. It's already been nearly 200 nights since I first joined LR for graphics card advice. Guess one or two more aren't gonna kill me.!!

At the end of the day considering my gaming needs, is there really that much difference between the 9800GT v the 9600GT? I'm really looking at a performance/price mark. Especially with my limited gaming. Don't mean to be difficult.....but I'm really waffling between these two. #-o

Thanks
Jack

The 8800gt has more shader processors than the 9600gt. 112 compared to 64. I would get the 8800gt (or 9800gt) rather than the 9600.

Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year

Anybody read Spanish? Something about a problem with DPC Latency. Other than that, I think he liked it?

I lived in South Texas (Brownsville, Mexico) for 5 years but my Spanish was limited to taking pizza orders at Papa John's face-to-face with a lot of gesturing. "Grande Pizza, muy queso y salsa" and the toppings were about as good as it got. Usually I just got one of my drivers or cooks to take the order, definitely when it was over the phone. I suffer from Mississippi-itis. In other words, "Ah tawlk redneck ifn y'all pulease?" I got called a "stupid *effing* gringo" more times than I can count. & :finga:

Guess I'll hold on for the OT this week when we do the network install and get the 9800 next week and call it quits. That way I can afford a game or two while I'm at it. Whaddya think? BTW, nada por (???)Canadians

Thanks

9800GT is a good card. Will last you for a good while (with the casual gaming you are planning on doing).

Thanks Babel Fish, for giving me a completely worthless response:
Pros: I buy this sweepings thinking that she was going to be able has to juagar Crysis and the excrement this what gave a problem me with the DPC Latency of my computer. I almost had to go to a brujero it says so that me what it happened to him until to the aim I realized that was the card this. Cons: An excrement, you do not buy it because it goes has to give problems to you.
He does call the card "Excrement". That is a pretty good indication.
