Need advice for an HTPC CPU fan

Post by Sporg »

I'm looking at putting together a new rig for the wife (basically a home for the two new 9600 GSO cards to fold) and she doesn't want a tower anymore. So I decided just to get an HTPC case that eventually may find its way into the entertainment center. But for now it will be sitting on her desk. I pretty much have all of my parts picked out except for the CPU cooler.

Case I'm looking at (SILVERSTONE LC10B-E): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811163118

Probably going to go with a C2D 7200 on an Asus P5N-D - so we're looking at socket 775 here.

This thing is going to be in our bedroom (for now) and I'm going to try to leave it on as much as possible to fold. So I won't be doing any over-clocking (not that I ever do anyway) on it and am looking for something that's going to move some air and be fairly quiet. If you look at the case, then you will notice that there are two exhaust fans directly behind where the CPU cooler will be. Honestly I'd like to find a cooler that will blow/suck toward those exhaust fans. I'm also not opposed to cutting out a hole in the top and just putting a fan grill or something up there.

So I'm looking at a cooler like this ( ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835186134 but am concerned about clearance.

My questions are:
1) Does anyone have this case? If so, what cooler are you using?
2) Does anyone think that the arctic cooling fan will fit?

I'd like to get this sorted out this weekend so I can place the order. The only thing holding me up right now is the stinking fan. Thanks in advance for any suggestions

The Freezer 7 Pro is listed as being 5" tall, and the case is 6.7" tall. Even discounting for feet height and motherboard and motherboard stand-off, that's not going to be much more than an inch. So yes I think that the Freezer 7 Pro will fit.

That's pretty much what I was thinking too. It's going to be a bit close, but should work. Thanks for the input.

if you want it real quiet you can always splurge on a nocturna fan (the smaller ones)

Cool, but I already ordered that arctic cooling fan I listed above. It's pretty darn quiet, I helped a friend with a build recently and you can barely hear it.
