Boosting Points

Post by Alathald »

OK, some may have noticed I'm back to folding (finally) and the past few days I've been testing out a little frankenstein experiment with my rig (in the sig, though cpu is at stock). I've been running both GPU2 and SMP clients at the same time...on a dual core  . It seems to be going really well, the SMP hasn't affected the GPU2 client in the slightest and I'm still doing around 1000ppd on average with my little AMD chip (2.4GHz if my memory serves). Anyway, on to how I set it up so others can try and (hopefully) boost the points a bit.

First, I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 for those curious...IDK if this will work on other OS'. Anyway, first thing I did was set up the GPU2 client like normal with all the latest drivers etc. but I went into the Advanced tab in Configuration and checked the box for Core Priority: Slightly Higher. After that, I followed the guide I put up over here for SMP folding in VMware. That's it. Really. I think the key is having the priority of the GPU2 client slightly higher than the VMware SMP client...

Pretty boring post I know but hopefully it's a useful one and will help boost our ppd as much as possible. Also, if you try it let us know how it goes and if it works (be sure to include what OS you're running).

On a side, Matt's VMware guide will probably work just as well except I could never get it to work in Vista x64 (known bug actually, nothing to do with the guide). VMplayer works fine though and IMO the installation is a bit easier.

Wanna experiment XP for me? I want to run SMP and GPU instead of CLI and GPU for rig in sig, but vibronchef said in my thread that it won't work well in XP because of the nature of XP. Plus, 8+ hours a day really limits my folding time.

Also, there's another method that you can use to set the core priority for your GPU folding. Since it's a NVIDIA GPU, you can change the F@H Environment Variable. If you want to know the details, let me know and I shall post it here.

Geo, already doing exactly that ;)
I have SMP running on my E6750 @ 3Ghz through VMplayer (in XP 32-Bit) and GPU2 with my 8800GTS 512
AND I can see everything through FAHmon. Follow his guide and if you need any clarification PM either Alathald or me and we'll help you.

Like said, when I get the time your guide, will be placed in place of mine as a caveat for Vista Win64

Did what he did, but on XP Pro.
Went from ~2min per step on GPU2 to ~25min per step.
Moving to Vista now.

So no CPU usage = 25 min per step?! What's wrong with XP?!?! How come Vista doesn't have this problem?

Just noticed I finished 3 WU today and only of them are showing up atm on folding.extremeoverclocking. They better show up...otherwise I'm gonna get mad. I'm already out of the top 20...

I've got two, somethings up with F@H, my stats page has been updating for a day now.

stopthekilling77, it might be that Vista better handles priority settings for the new clients, and that's why its not working on XP.

i did what alathald did on the new system i won (thanks lr!) but according to FAHMON 2 cores of the phenom is only giving me ~700 ppd? total for the new system according to fah mon is only around 3.5k ppd :-k it should be at least 5k with 2 cores and a gpu folding (leaving one for other stuff as its going to be under heavy use, not just a dedicated folding rig)

Folding team take a look at memory usage. Mine is way up. I don't know why, but it's using more than I have.

I rebooted rig and memory usage is back to what it should be. Must of had a program running in the background.

Just got back from a hike and my memory usage is way up again. I think it is my spyware doctor, but I have been running that program for over 2 years and never had this problem. I turned spyware doctor off and memory dropped right away.

are you using Firefox? If I leave firefox open, especially with meebo running, I get memory leaks like crazy. I always shut it down when I'm not using it.
