Re: D975XBX2 - Another Problem
Before I went to bed last night, the computer booted up and was on for about 10 min before I shut it down and went to bed. Tonight, I turned it on and it stayed on for abou 15 min before the red light came on the mobo. I have that intel hardware monitor thingy on my desktop and the only thing I noticed that the processor thermal margin went up to about 52c. Would this cause problems? I'm not sure how to interpret what's acceptable and what's not.
I didn't get a chance to try the linux cd thing yet.
Thanks!

Re: D975XBX2 - Another Problem
I went to intels site and started up chat with someone in support. He wants me to do a recovery on my bios so i'm going to do that tomorrow when I can burn the file to a cd and boot from it. Just want to give an update of what i'm trying next.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: D975XBX2 - Another Problem
Belay my last idea then, if it's booting and staying on a while then it probably is temps. 52c at idle sounds a bit warm for your CPU (my E6850 idles at ~34c on stock Intel cooling).
Try using speedfan to monitor your temps:

Nah, 52C is still well within the CPU's operating envelope. My Celeron 430 normally ran that high idle during summer (95F/35C room temps).

Re: D975XBX2 - Another Problem
I just finished the bios recovery/update. I loaded vista and it didn't even finish loading all of my programs before the light came on the mobo. Hmm, going to go back to intel support and see what they say. Any other ideas to try?
Thanks again!

Re: D975XBX2 - Another Problem
I spoke to a support rep yesterday and they wanted me to try removing the CMOS battery. I did that today and still the same problem. I guess we can cross this one off the list

Re: D975XBX2 - Another Problem
Still waiting on a response from intel. Does anyone think I should try taking the heatstink off and applying new thermal grease?
Re: D975XBX2 - Another Problem
If you have some spare thermal paste then it can't hurt to try it.
Make sure you clean off the other stuff thoroughly, and when you are applying the new paste just a small grain of rice sized application down the middle of the CPU is enough for the paste to work at it's best.

Re: D975XBX2 - Another Problem
Maybe I'm reading it wrong but I'm wondering if it's not a video error either in the card or on the board (if it's onboard) From what I understood, you're fine in BIOS or anything that's just basic 16 color but as soon as you go into the OS it pukes. Is that right?
Just my 2 cents.

Re: D975XBX2 - Another Problem
Yeah, you could say that. Could the video cause the red light on the motherboard to come on? What would you recommend, can I move the card to another slot? I have a geforce 8800gts. I looked at the motherboard and the primary pci-e slot is for x16 electrical and the other slot is for x8. Will this matter?
Thanks!

Re: D975XBX2 - Another Problem
It would just slow your card down to x8. I'm kinda grasping at straws here but that's what it sounds like to me. Try the card in the x8 and see what happens. Couldn't hurt anyway. I don't suppose your mobo has built in video does it? You could try that also just for sh*ts and giggles.
Hope something helps you out!
Good luck

Re: D975XBX2 - Another Problem
No on board video i'm afraid. I think i'm going to try running that linux live cd first and see if we can eliminate this being a vista problem. I'll try running that tonight and post my results. FarCry 2 is out today so i'm getting anxious to play it!
Thanks for all the help so far guys!

Re: D975XBX2 - Another Problem
I'm downloading this ubuntu os now. I was reading through some documentation and it sounds like this will install the os on my machine and maybe over write what I have on there now. Can anyone confirm and explain? Thanks!
Re: D975XBX2 - Another Problem
If it is the regular CD/DVD version, you can just pop it into the CD/DVD drive and tell it to start the LiveCD mode and it will run purely from your CD/DVD (without overwriting anything).

No dice on that linux live cd. It got about 10 seconds into the loading and red light on the mobo, just like with Vista. Going to move the video card to the second pci-e (x8) slot next.

Just curious how moving it worked out for you? I saw you were up pretty late with it last night.

Re: D975XBX2 - Another Problem
Hey Jack, thanks for the concern! I haven't switched over the card yet. The card is kind of a pain to get in and out with the way my power cords are tied up. I'll post as soon as I try this.
On another note, I did find a thread on a different forum (can't remember the link - will post later) where someone had the exact same problem as me. In the end, his local computer shop told him the cpu and board were bad. It sounded like he tried most of the things I've done already, plus a few more. I don't think my cpu is bad, just the mobo. I'll post the link to that forum later so maybe someone can comment on what they think. I do have a question about removing the thermal paste. I used Artic Silver. What's the best method for removing this stuff? Do I need to buy some special cleaner or will some elbow grease do the trick.
Thanks!

Re: D975XBX2 - Another Problem
There are plenty of ways, the most popular are isopropyl alcohol or acetone.
Stuff made specifically to do the job includes AS's own ArctiClean, or Akasa's TIm Clean.
You can use anything from a (soft) paper towel to qtips to clean it off.

Re: D975XBX2 - Another Problem
This is gonna sound ridiculous, but ....
Is there any way you could put the system in a fridge overnight and then try it again? (Power on while it's still cold.)
Don't wait until condensation forms to power on.
Sounds like it's a heat problem to me. (One which you might not be able to fix ... but this test might confirm it.)
I had a hard drive a few weeks back that I recovered files off of for the customer by doing this.
The platter was spinning down after it reached a certain temp.
By starting off COLD .... it stayed up long enough for me to get into it and do the deed.
Disclaimer ...
Try this at your own risk ... condensation can be a killer.
It's merely a last ditch effort.
A "Hail Mary" pass if you will.
