Folding Question
I have a D975XBX2 motherboard and a PC Power and Cooling 750 power supply with a GTX280 video card right now. I was thinking about adding another GTX280 card. Right now I am using a 6 pin to 8 pin connector. My questions are
1. Will the power supply be enough to handle another GTX280 video card. Using another 6 pin to 8 pin connector, will it be safe?
2. Will the performance of the video card be hurt having only 8 or 4 pci slot for folding 24/7. Would the speed be cut in half folding both cards not in SLI.
Do I need a larger power supply?
Off topic: Will the stock market go up or down after the Fed Decision?
My rig: [email protected], 2GB corsair dom 8500, XFX gtx280, pc cooling 750 sliencer ps, Sliverstone TJ09 case, Zalman 9700 cpu fan, badaxe2 motherboard, xp pro sp3 32 bit, creative extreme x-fi pro soundcard, 150GBX2 raptors(no raid), 2 DVD burners

Re: Folding Question
Can you even run SLI in that board? My thoughts were that SLI only worked in nvidia chipset boards.
Or is it capable of running to geforce cards that are NOT in sli?

Re: Folding Question
Good question
I was over at the folding@home forum and found out you can run more than one Nvidia card on a Intel board as long as it is not in SLI.

Re: Folding Question
I had an ATI and NVIDIA card on that board at the same time. I picked up one of those 9600GSOs, but couldn't get Fold@home working on the GSO. So I decided to put a new rig together for the wife with two 9600GSOs.
You should be able to run a second NVIDIA card on there. I'm not sure how the 8x would affect folding performance though.

Re: Folding Question
you can't run SLI and then fold, so no worries about SLI unless you want SLI and then the answer is no.
As for the power supply... Think it should work.
Having a x8 or x16 PCIe bus shouldn't matter too much I wouldn't think as it's just doing a WU, which has less throughput on the bus than say a game.

Re: Folding Question
I never cared about SLI because I don't play games. Just wanted to add a second card so I wouldn't be passed up in folding. If I needed to buy a new power supply I wouldn't buy a new graphic card until I build a new rig. I just didn't want to order the card and find out later that my power supply is underpowered, or that 8x or 4x would be slower and that it is not worth the money.

Re: Folding Question
Edit: 11/07/08 I didn't want to take a chance with the 750 watt power supply so I just ordered a new power supply from the egg. Corsair HX1000, and I ordered a second XFXgtx280. That should give me a few extra PPD.

Re: Folding Question
Natasha would kill me if I did. I have a couple of games around the house that I don't use. The new card comes with a game as well. I hope early next year to build a new rig, something like Nates without watercooling. All depends on the stock market. Believe me that this rig gets a royal workout everyday with Natasha using it for work.

Re: Folding Question
Well I have some bad news. Received my XFXgtx280 today and power supply. When I went to put in the second card it blocked 2 of my SATA ports. So until I can figure a way around this I can't use the card. I was thinking of a L SATA wire. Do you think that will do the trick or am I SOL? Any thoughts, because I really tried to smash it in there but no luck. I do like the Corsair HX1000 power supply, I put the fan on the bottom, I hope that is correct.
Re: Folding Question
do you have any of the 90 degree cables?
I think those would work, be careful if you have to buy some because some of them are still kinda big. I was looking and some sit just as high as the regular cables do. Here's one that looks like it fits pretty tight.

Re: Folding Question
Thanks guys, parts ordered
On a side note, I downloaded the new version of the GPU2 client Windows XP/2003/Vista GPU System tray client (installer msi) 6.20r1 It seems to run alot slower. Has anyone else tried this version and what are your results.
