MSI HD2600XT pci-e running very hot!

I appreciate your input.

On another board, I'm currently getting flamed for doubting their idea of the PSU being too inefficient.

I've posted a link in here to that board earlier, please check it out as I want your opinion about their answers.

Please, be nice to them ;) Somehow it sounds right when my 12v rail only can supply 180 watts PEAK, and... Well, probably about 100 watts continuously.

Sorry to say, but I have to agree with their train of thought.

The sticker you posted said that those were max values, and so will be peak readings. And as you have already begun to suspect, the sustainable load will be much less.

Hah, wait, a dude in there just pointed out that PC2-5200 modules only are made for 266 MHz and not 333 MHz. Not true :D - PC2-5200 modules are 667 MHz rated (333 MHz DDR) - so that's not the prob.

Gotta admit, I didn't run the Memtest86 test. I did, and it shows that at 62%, it fails, with whatever module i plug in. When I test them in another PC, they're just fine, just keeps running. When i take a 1066 rated module (which should be plenty for my 667 board), they ALSO fail at 62% - which is read/write fdffffff pattern.

Whoops, could seem like a mobo related issue.

I agree that that PSU is total crap but what he says after that is mostly wrong. 28a on a 12v rail is totaly overkill. he says he thinks its something like 8 amps but it says right on the lable 15a and 16.2 a >_> and if you have the amps and you know w its on the 12v rail then what do you know you can find your wattage

Uhh, was kinda lazy reading all the posts....sorry.

Regarding the high temperatures. Did you turn up the fan speed? Clean your case of the dust that might've built up over the years?

If you had bothered reading through the posts, the heat problem has been fixed, although the computer is still unstable

If I get what you mean about you RAM, have you tried downclocking your RAM? What about running them at relaxed timings and giving them more voltages?

The ram is running at rated timings and clocks, so I'm not gonna change that.

New mobo today
New PSU today (520watt 20amps at 12v, should be enough!)
New XP install, all new drivers.
Memtest OK now!

Game hangs, screen goes black, and game returns! Although it "pauses" too often to be playable.

When I close the game i get this dialog "in return"

Cancelled my user at the other site, they kept suggesting that everything ELSE than the GFX was defective.
Now I apprarently bought a crappy PSU (they assumed that the 20amps was max, which aint the fact this time!) - and my mem modules can't cope with the rated timings and clocks.

So now I need another new PSU and some new mem modules.

No way.

My mem modules has been tested OK in other rigs at the same timings and clocks - and tests just fine here in my rig with new mobo and psu.

I can't think of anything else to go wrong than my GFX.

With everything being freshly installed, and most of the PC new components, odds are back on the graphics card as being faulty.

Like I suggested earlier, try getting in touch with where you bought it from to request an RMA to get it repaired/replaced under warranty.

Just plugged in my buddys HD4800 - if that works like a charm, the PSU should be good, and the my HD2600 can be rated bad ;)

Kinda good news. The HD4800 which is a much more power consumpting card worked like a charm, 1680*1050, Ultra Quality.

Seems like the HD2600XT is done for it.

The board admin (who accidentally was a fan of the PSU story) has closed the board, as he didn't fell that it lead anywhere ;)

He submitted a post stating that my new PSU was crappy FOR SURE, and my mem modules was fucked and ran at too high a clock / too stressed a timing.

Anyways, I'm glad to feel welcome in here. It's a nice feeling.
