Ok, the only thing i have changed is my laptop not folding (Sempron 3300+ cpu), yet my points have dropped like a rock! I restarted all my gpu clients and they are running fine. Only the linux computer keeps having problems, but i check that at least once a day to make sure it didnt **** it pants or lose the wireless signal (1 floor up and 50 feet away, you would think the signal would be more than 0-1 bar, but its not). I think I was around 14k a day, now I am only getting around 11k...anyone have any ideas?

I did do some beta testing on parts I got, but the computers were only down for maybe an hour at a time MAX.

I even have my Q6700 oc'd to 3ghz ( woohoo, i know that massive .34 ghz per core increase :p ) and I still seem to be getting lousy points.

could it just be the wu's I am getting?

If you have an Intel MB and have no way to OC - try a program called setfsb!!!! too bad mine wont stay stable at 3.2ghz per core (I think its the memory, since it is only 400mhz memory - might try and underclock it in bios if that is possible on this board and see if I can get the cpu to go higher)

What type of wireless card are you using? If it's broadcom, make sure you have the latest drivers (they'll be in the proprietary drivers section with the gfx drivers). I have a laptop that was giving me issues with a broadcom driver in linux but the newest driver straightened it out.

Linksys - even the kids computer is having problems upstairs. I think maybe the usb wireless devices themselves are going bad - they were refurbished when I bought them a couple years ago, so I guess it is time to upgrade!

Might have to pick up an internal Wireless N card, maybe the Extreme version like my router, and see how it works.

My laptop got a wireless signal this last time I installed Ubuntu on it, but it didnt last, so I went back to windows. Linux has a LOT of catching up to do on wireless!

Besides your wireless problem everyone's PPD has taken a hit this week mostly due to the F@H server issues!
I know mine has taken a 1000 PPD hit this week!
Hopefully we will all rebound this next week!

IDK much about linksys Linux support but I thought that madwifi drivers supported them...as for getting a type n card...don't, I've had nothing but trouble with mine in Linux (it has gotten better though).

My next system will definitely be Intel/nVidia (maybe Intel/Intel), I've been none to impressed with AMD/ATIs support for Linux.

ok, well Linux went bye-bye last night! maybe this will solve my problem. I installed XP and have to do more updates and install fah, but it should work 1000times better tahn linux ever did! At least my wireless doesnt lose connection anymore - go figure. I also have a better reception from windows than I did with linux....sigh

I REALLY wanted linux running upstairs so I could play around, but it is not even NEAR ready for anything with wireless, especially wireless-N.

If the wireless crap gets fixed, it will be an OK os. Still needs to work on installing programs, we have the program manager thingy and then we have an add/remove thing also - wtf...one or the other, dont need both. Of course it still need to be easier to install programs that are not in the list from the manager, but that will probably not ever happen.

Yes, I know some people have GREAT luck with wireless depending on your card, but it shouldn't matter what card you have, it should be supported! Oh and by supported I mean that you dont have to try and trick linux into using windows drivers ;)

Well it doesn't look like your willing to work with it so I'll ignore the wireless Linux crack. I have been able to get every card working, and I guarentee you would have gotten your card working with NDISwrapper, but it seems a lot of people just want an excuse to dump Linux and thats fine, if you want to loose the gain in points Linux gives you fine, at least run a VM on your Windows client and get the 5 percent boost in stead of native 10.

In fact the only thing in 8.10 that didn't work out of the box was the touchscreen. I've been really impressed with 8.10 so far, might just drop in a LiveCD to see if there's been a fix for your card as well.

Also I just realized, just because its Linksys doesn't mean its madwifi, there are a ton of chipsets that Linksys uses, including Broadcom and Atheros. Plus NDISwrapper almost always works.

Yeah Athalad I noticed the better wifi in 8.10 as well, my Linkys WUSB54GC worked out of the box, which was nice

I always connect to a hard line if I can, but if your wall has already been dry walled it can be a pain to run cat-6 cables through the house.

For those of us that rent or still live at home, running a hard line is not possible, especially if you have more than one computer in your room

Simple trick is to run the cat lines through the cold air returns of the house. This way the job of getting a line around the house is easy. Another trick is to tuck the line betwixt the carpet and the molding to hide it.

My wife hates wires and will cut them if they are visible to the eye. I've gotten to be really good getting them to be nearly invisible.

That's got to be annoying if you've just laid a new cat5 cable for your pc and haven't had chance to hide it yet!

Didnt say I wasnt willing! I tried ALL kinds of things I found in the ubuntu forums and just by searching and NONE of them worked for my DWA-552 cards I just got. I constantly lost signal, would not regain signal, hell i was connected to my router at 1mbps on a N card!!

I had a hell of a time with my laptop getting it to run on linux, but it finally did work after a lot of playing around, so I do try ;) This was just pitiful. There was no reason that linux should keep dropping connection or give me 1mbps speed.

I want to try moving the router around to see if I can get better signal strength, then i might try to dual boot with linux again to see if I just need a stronger signal for linux to work right or not. I get the same signal strength from the neighbors house 2 doors away as I do upstairs in mine!

Blame Dlink, they did not port there drivers over to Linux. Also, there is an issue with the A2 workunits, hence the units crashing. I wasn't trying to be antagonistic. I just hope you fold and get the most out of your rig
