TOO MUCH NEWS!

Post by Darkstar »

I usually log on and check the LR site quickly to see whats going on by hitting "view active topics" now i get all the news posts and it makes it a bit of a pain to sift through for the users posts. Any way to have the news stay in the news section?

+1

A couple people here are actually looking into a way to mod the board so we can turn off the news feed if we don't want it. This was a big problem form yesterday when they turned on some new script that pulls news articles from other websites. Should have died down by now.

Guess I'm one of the weird ones that scroll through the forums...

What happened to Amy? Now all the posts just say Legit Reviews posted them. It seems that her name is being blocked.

Its a robot, Nate is out of town, so no resolution will occur probably till next week, I'll bring this up with the staff, although its already been discussed in the other threads. Fact of the matter is, this brings in money to our site. So you may not like it, but if you want these forums to stay around, then you'll have to bear with us. That being said, I don't like it either, but what can you do.

Write a greasemonkey script to hide all posts from LegtNews on the New Posts page  I'm brushing up on my Java ATM...I'm really bad with Java though so be forewarned, the code will be a hideous monstrosity. :axe:

I finally got around to writing that greasemonkey script, it's not a perfect hack but it works...install Greasemonkey and then install this userscript: [link]

It will only hide the posts on the New Posts page, not any other pages.

I'm still posting. We are wanting to get other sites to exchange their news with us so we can provide you with more articles to read from around the web. Using rss feeds, when available, was an idea we had so my job does not become overwhelming as more and more sites jump on board.

Justin and I set up the script a couple days ago and I'm not sure how it's going to work out. For starters justin enabled 5 of the latest RSS feeds to be posted at once with the mysql tables, but that was to many. It should have been 1 and never more than 1.... the result or press releases was 5 posts per company, 20+ companies... oh crap that is a ton of posts at once.

I've disabled the auto poster 100% across the board this morning when I woke up at 5am... Before I even read this as the results of the auto poster were annoying to me as well. We need to post affiliate news and are trying to get more affiliates... With a list of over 400 online review sites that want to possibly share news that will mean amy will be doing hundreds of news posts per day if we affiliate with each site and they do daily content. I thought that automation from the RSS feeds would do a few things

1) Post content 24/7
2) Give our affiliates better coverage and link backs
3) increase forum search traffic since it had more url's and keywords
4) free up amy to post news from sites that don't have rss feeds

The result of using it for 48 hours was a crap load of posts (setting error on our part) and some were being double posted (software error in program). Not sure what the best way to do this would be.

I really liked the little guy, there were some interesting articles he was posting but it was just annoying me on the New Posts, I was still planning on checking the News Section when I wanted to get the News though. Would rather do it via one page (the forums) then have to wander across the interwebs trying to find interesting stuff.

But yeah, was way to much way to soon :axe:
