Super Talent OX-MLC 64GB Benchmark Testing

Post by Apoptosis »

Super Talent Master Drive OX-MLC 64GB 2.5" SATA2 SSD Results on a motherboard with the ICH10R South Bridge:
supertalent_hdtach_write.jpg
supertalent_hdtach_write.jpg (121.63 KiB) Viewed 15840 times
Rated Drive Speeds:
150MB Read
100MB Write

Observed Drive Speeds:
141.2MB Read
40.7MB Write

I contacted Super Talent and they said something must be wrong with the drive on the ICH10R chipset and that they tested on the ICH9/R and it did better. I didn't have one of those platforms on the test bench, but I did have the NVIDIA nForce 790i SLI motherboard on the table.

supertalent_790i2.jpg (116.46 KiB) Viewed 15810 times
Observed Drive Speeds:
136.2 MB/s Read
54.5 MB/s Write

Looks like Super Talent screwed up the Firmware or something...

More to come in a review

This is the drive that came out the end of September for those that haven't heard of the OX series.
MasterDrive OX: Blazing Fast new SATA-II SSD

We introduced our third generation SATA SSD this month. Dubbed the MasterDrive OX, this SSD incorporates a new multi-channel controller and improved firmware that boost maximum sequential read/write speeds to a sprightly 150/100 MB/sec, enough horsepower to overtake the fastest hard drives. The OX is our fastest SSD yet, at more than double the sustained read and write speed of our first generation SATA SSD.

Some of the MasterDrive's other advantages over hard drives include extreme resistance to shock and vibration, zero noise, less power consumption, and less heat produced. The MasterDrive also supports higher altitudes and wider temperature ranges compared to hard drives.

FTM32GL25H - 32GB 2.5" MasterDrive OX $149
FTM64GL25H - 64GB 2.5" MasterDrive OX $259
FTM28GL25H - 128GB 2.5" MasterDrive OX $419

Wow  ...looking forward to the article then, 55.3Mb/s write is definitely not 100Mb/s write...

They are going to contact Jmicron (the controller company) on Monday to see if they can figure this out.

Figure I'll post up some more performance scores since I did all the testing...

Sandra 2009 Build 15.42 - Write Performance of 38.58MB/s on the Gigabyte EP45-DQ6 with the ICH10R

CrystalDiskMark 2.1 - Write Performance of 54.27MB/s on the Gigabyte EP45-DQ6 with the ICH10R

supertalent_ssd_cdm.jpg (36.91 KiB) Viewed 15729 times
ATTO Disk Benchmark - Write Performance of 57.36MB/s on the Gigabyte EP45-DQ6 with the ICH10R
supertalent_ssd_aato1.jpg
supertalent_ssd_aato1.jpg (79.14 KiB) Viewed 15721 times
Nothing is close to the reported 100MB/s that the drive is rated at.

ATTO - 57.36MB/s Write
CrystalDiskMark - 54.27MB/s Write
HD Tach 40.7MB/s Write
HD Tune 35.7MB/s Write
Sandra 2009 38.58MB/s Write

The spread on the write performance on these five benchmarks is huge also... 38.6MB/s on the slowest and 57.4MB/s on the fastest.

Look at post #20 on that thread, he did some hack to the MFT, and look at the speeds!?!?

Something has got to be wrong with those results, surely!

Its a false positive, look at the burst and the minimum, how can the minimum be higher than the burst.

That's impossible :P¨

SATA2 cannot go any faster than 300MB/s

If you look at when he timed a file transfer and un zipping, and do the math its 50Mb/s and 53.3mb/s

Was there ever any update on this drive. Right now I am debating between two of the Intel SSD's in RAID 0 or 4-6 of these in a RAID-0. The price is right on these OX drives and I will be hooking them up to an Adaptec 58016 (or something like that) series controller card. I am hoping with the caching on the card it may help make up for the write performance. Right now I am just very torn on what to do.
