Rambus says DRAM micro-threading will make graphics fly

Post by LVCapo »

MEMORY IP company Rambus claimed it has develped technology which will allow microthreading of DRAM cores which can deliver up to four times performance compared to the current approach.

The technique allows DRAM to provide more data bandwidth by allowing smaller pieces of data to be transferred to and from the chips, which also has the side effect of keeping power consumption to a minimum.

Separate addresses are provided to different memory core partitions while simultaneously accessible banks can give concurrent retrieval of data in one single transmission, Rambus claimed.

That means that, for example, that while a standard GDDR SDRAM used by a 3D app can deliver between 50 and 125 million triangles a section, multithreading such a memory can deliver between 100 and 500 triangles a second.

There's little cost to adding micro-threading, claimed Rambus. DRAM controller need to be optimised for the new technology. Rambus has already applied for a patent and, not much surprise this, is ready to license it to you.

Rambus always comes out with good technology if only that would loosen their grip on licesing then maybe we the consumer could glean some benifit from it.

Rambus is a Think tank that has know real products just innovasions. They have to protect them selves . People like Bill Gates would still there Ideas! So they have to use the courts to protect themselves.
On a side note if I were Amd when Morem comes to market it well destroy anything they have :axe: . Unless Amd 1 ups Intel and comes out with a ondie XDR memory controller. That would be something. :finga:

If only RAMBUS technology were affordable...sigh...so awesome but such a rip-off!

Yeah, it all seems promising, but will the average consumer benefit from any of it?

There is somewhat of a trickle-down effect in PCs. There's alot of CPU horsepower that isn't used on a gaming rig unless you're playing games. Have you noticed how MS Office has required more and more powerful systems (skool PCs w/P4 1.6s chug) so "basic" PCs get more power? And then how desktops are shipping with 1GB memory now? Maybe the RAMBUS technologies will do that too...

Any idea as to when a release on this kind of ram will be out? Will I have to change my mobo or will it still work in a DDR type?

Another great innovation by RAMBUS, but as has been said, when will we
see it in our PC's.
Sony is using XDR in the PS3 and uses RDRAM in the PS2, but when will
it grace our humble desktops?
