Where to get aggressive blacklist?

Post by DX »

Where can I get a blacklist for my hosts file that is VERY aggressive in the sites black holed? I haven't had much luck googling so far. Or at least not yet still looking. I have the spybot one but I would like to blacklist as much as possible while still be able to function.

This is just for a hosts file right now.

Who are you filtering for? Yourself?

What sort of things are you looking to block out?

If I could block all of Russia, China well you get the idea. As much as possible but it seems that a huge number of attacks rely on servers in other countries. If I can block traffic to those countries it would be helpful. I did find a set of hosts files here that block different categories like;

Anti-malware (22 November 2008): 52 841 dangerous sites blocked;
Anti-advertising (22 November 2008): 53 793 advertising sites blocked;
Anti-trackers (22 November 2008): 90 533 sites blocked intrusive;
Anti-sex (22 November 2008): 228 548 pornographic sites blocked;
Anti-everything (22 November 2008): 632 215 blocked sites (the previous included)

The bigger the hosts file the longer your boot time but if you're like me the system almost never shuts down.

You should look into proxomitron, see if that's any good for you. Their default filters are described here, so see if they are any good for you (or if you can in fact get a different set of filters).

Although it was meant more for P2P, maybe you should try getting peerguadian 2, that blocks a hell of a lot of blacklisted IP's too.

My primary concern is to limit as much malicious traffic as possible.

I'm still a bit confused as to what you want the end result to be with this.

But if you want to block ALL bad stuff ...
Seems to me it would make more sense to do it in your router.
Build a SmoothWall router with the default settings and it won't even let you go to Google or Legit Reviews!
You have to go into the router and "open" the web sites you want to be able to visit.
This is what they call a "Closed" scenario.
The other 2 options they haver are "Half Open" and "Open".

You can find it here ...

Basically if i hit a site that has been the victim of some drive by hack I don't want my browser redirected to another server to drop infected stuff on my system. I have a NAT router and the new Symantec corporate edition Endpoint Protection that has a decent firewall. Basically it is another line of defense to add to guard against site admins that don't keep their servers fully updated. And how can they when some of the security holes maybe already exploited before patches have been issues. So if sections of the net are known to harbor those with criminal intent I would like to block my system from contact with those system. So blackholing those is a good thing to me. I might go to SmoothWall at some point but for now I'm not simply as it is easier for me to put in a huge blacklist than to open it up to the places I want to go.

Get PeerGuardian and apply the blocklists you want.
Suggestions:
Bluetack Lists
Encrypt the Planet Country Lists
Custom Country Blocklists

When you enable PeerGuardian have it run in the background and block HTTP traffic.

When I used it last ...
Spyware Blaster functioned by using a list of restricted sites.

OpenDNS.org

Let everything get filtered through the DNS site first before anything gets to you. :P

You can run a standard default coverage or a custom one.
