How do I get onto a baseball team
I live in Jacksonville, Florida. I have more than it takes, maybe my fielding is slightly rusty since I haven't played in a while. I need to hit against a few strong pitchers to get used to that as well. But, I can slam a ball with a bat. I can hit numerous home runs, quick reaction, and pitch faster than anyone I've ever met. I pitched a no hitter year when I was younger (14) Obviously undefeated for 3 straight years. I was the pitcher. I can still throw a sick fastball, slider, curveball and change up. My pitch has to be well over 85. Considering last clocked pitch I had was 85 @ 14 years old. Now I know it's late I'm 23, but I want in the sport. I know I have what it takes, BUT
What do tryouts consist of?
Where can I go to try out?
How the hell can I stop them from immediately thinking I'm on steroids? I've never touched them, but most people would think I have. Do you think this will hurt my chances?
My stats, 6'1 241 today around 10% bodyfat.
Fastball is accurate and I'm positive it's about 95-98. I tried a speed gun I got online and it's wrong it claims I'm throwing 105. I know that isn't right. But, I clocked my car with my gf in it. It was doing 50 the radar said 52. 4% off would yield about 99mph but, that is only 15ft from me.
So any info on where to go locally to florida let me know. Or any info you may have.

Find out if there are any amateure leagues in your area. Some of them hold open tryouts. If you have what it takes go try out. I doubt people will automatically think steroids. If they do you can offer to be tested.

awesome thanks. What I did was kept typing in Jacksonville Suns and find out stuff and couldn't find any info. They kept saying contact your local recruiter.

I googled for "baseball open tryouts"...
Might take a look at this link as it has dates and times.

I gotta wait till June? DAMN. I'd be willing to travel if it would speed things up. That's hurting. I also would HATE to play for a team as a pitcher and not be able to bat.

I'd try to get on a competitive league around your house to keep at it all year round and then try out for the open tryouts that happen in the spring for the majors. You'd have to call around to the major teams to see when they are and how you can walk on without an agent to try.

Re: How do I get onto a baseball team
I have been looking for local teams, all I can find is softball.. Not into that. even my gf plays hard pitch lol. But, I know where I used to live there was a bunch of teams. Considering the Dodgers and Mets both played within 20 miles of me.
Re: How do I get onto a baseball team
2 ways that I can think of:
1. Call or email all of the area teams (Marlins, Rays, Braves, etc) and see if they have open try-outs. Some of them do. Odds of making the team are damn slim. Even if you have the raw skills, it takes time to polish them. They are looking for players that can be big league ready pretty quickly.
2. Go to college, walk on the team. This is your best option.
In high school, I played on a horrible team but I threw about 95, struck out an average of 8 players a game (my record was 17) and had a 1.84 ERA. I was a decent hitter as well. I was scouted by the Reds and a few other teams (not sure who all the scouts were). I ended up going to college, missing the tryouts (it's not really advertised) and life kinda took over from there. I don't know if I could have played pro but I could have made it to the AA or AAA level at least. I played softball for years, now my arm is ragged. I'd be lucky to throw 65.

Re: How do I get onto a baseball team
That sucks, yea even making the lower AA or AAA would be nice to get somewhere to polish my skills up. As for the college team, I'm trying out for that if nothing else. Their try outs seem pretty easy. Show up throw from 3rd to 1st, bat against a machine, you get 15 pitches to show off your swing. And 60 feet sprints. I'm positive I'll do fine with that. A year of practice against people semi skilled is more than enough for me to then try out somewhere else.FZ1 wrote:2 ways that I can think of:

Re: How do I get onto a baseball team
I got my pitch speed tested today. With dead arm. Meaning it hurt like hell. I need to warm up more. It was done with a stop watch, and radar. Both compared to make sure it was accurate.
My accuracy was 3inches over 5 pitches. I didn't stress too much on my top speed because of how bad my arm has been after I started up again. My average was 94. I got a top speed of 98.9 on my final pitch. The world record from what I've seen is 100.9 by Nolan Ryan. I'm going to break it I'm positive. I'll post vids to prove this. I know everything is kind of hard to prove online, but, no one on here even knows my real name. Well maybe a few. If I get in the records books for speed I think this may help me at least get into the minors.

Re: How do I get onto a baseball team
Ok I spent some time during my off time. Trying to find out how to become the first pro ball player from LR. lol. I am unlucky but maybe lucky. How does this work you ask. I ended up meeting someone who played baseball before and he was friends with a recruiter. You might say damn that is lucky, if you are good enough. Well I met the guy. I have late breaking pitches. too late actually I'm looking into why this happens. But, I have 2 pitches that do what they are supposed to. Fastball and great change up. He saw them and said I have way more than enough power and potential to be looked at fast. But, here is the bad news, he is no longer a recruiter. He MIGHT know someone in it still. He said don't get my hopes up for him connecting me, but, I can supposedly make it with no problem. Now, my late breaking pitches is my next thing. I'm on Yahoo trying to figure out WTFudgella is going on. They break after 60ft. My 2 seam, breaks after 60 and hooks right HARD after that, and my slider same thing, does nothing. the pitch has perfect rotation and I'm launching it. Still breaks after 60ft though.

Re: How do I get onto a baseball team
My slider used to break late...i found out I was throwing it too hard. It wasn't getting the chance to break early enough. Let off a little, esp on the curve.

Re: How do I get onto a baseball team
I'll try that I'm just kind of afraid that if it's slower even though it has movement it might get a chunk taken out of the ball. I never mentioned my curve. You see thats a pain in the.... I can't figure out how the hell to throw it a decent speeds lol.
Since I know my fastball speed and we know my gfs speed, (74mph) all I can do is guess the rest as can our catcher (she is typically the catcher, but we have another person sometimes). My 2 seam and 4 seam are about the same speed so lets say an average of maybe 95-97. My slider doesn't really slow down much honestly I'd say about 93-95. Now my problem begins with a curve. I'd say... 65mph lol. I just can't figure it out.
. But I practice it as much as possible. When I rest up a bit more I will try to throw the slider slower.. I guess I had the misconception the faster the better the break. Now I'm dealing with some arm straining so I have to be careful.

I am no expert but all I know is that the best pitchers are the ones that stay healthy. Many of the great ones never made it to the big time because of injury.
