Elderly will be able to claim a firearm on health insurance!

Here's something I think the rest of the world doesn't understand.

<begin rant>

America was founded on the belief in "personal fredom and responsibility". Many of her citizens take that very seriously. Those of us in middle America rarely make the headlines in the sensational ways that those in California or other major cities do. Many of us are firearm enthusiasts. Lately it seems that the majority of us are fighting a loosing battle against firearm ignorance and discrimiation. Some people believe, falsely, that simply owning a firearm makes you that much more likely to hurt or kill another. They also believe, falsely, that a firearm is in itself deadly. A firearm is no more dangerous than say a car or a knife. It's the improper use of the tool that makes it dangerous and deadly. Many people die every year in car accidents yet no one seems to want to ban cars.

</end rant>

That being said I agree that it's pretty rediculous to give a senior citizen a gun. I also believe it's rediculious to allow them to continue to drive without compulsory diving tests. How many times to you hear about an elderly person confusing the gas and break peddles.

It happened to my grandfather in his own garage, and he put the car up for sale on his own that week. No one had to prompt him to reconsider driving. He hasn't driven since. My other grandfather is 91 years old and sharp as a 60 year old. He is his own mechanic also, he knows what he is doing, and is a better driver than most of the lunatics out there.

I was once driving down a one way street and an elderly woman was going the wrong way. She stopped her car about 3 feet from mine. I backed up to go around her and she pulled right up to my bumper again. Cops need to be taking away licenses in cases like this. She had absolutely no clue. I think it is a terrible idea to just hand out weapons to the elderly. Some of them are capable of proper use, but some are not.

It's like everything else, personal responsiblity. Captian America, for example, despite Martin's obvious parody was the paragon of personal responsibility. It cost him his life trying to do the right thing. He's a ficticious character and I'm aware of that, but it has nothing to do with the point. The characters in Ayn Rands "Atlas Shrugged" are ficticious. The characters in George Orwells "1984" are ficticious. The characters in Adlus Huxley's "Brave New World" are ficticious. Yet those characters carry the same weight to some people as real world ones.

We as a world have been lied to and told that nothing bad that happens to us is our fault. This is ludicrious. Life isn't fair, that's true enough. But in the final analysis we are the sumnation of the choices we've made in life. I chose to drop out of high school. I chose to go to community college. I chose any one of a thousand other choices in my life that made me who I am. I chose whether I pull the trigger or not. Nothing in this world is more responsible for that choice than I am. Not the games I've played. Not the films I've seen. Not the music I've listened to.

On this subject, I agree it is a bit silly for the government to step in and say a gun is the same as a prostetic limb or a cane. I also agree it's sad that an elderly person has to fear for thier own life. If this makes them feel better, so be it. It's personal responsibility. In order to legally own a firearm in the United States you have to be mentally compentent. Anyone who has been adjucated mentally impared or incompetent cannot own a firearm in this country. That's per the law.

Just to add to your rant Skippman ( which i Agree with fully)
It is Illegal to drink and drive. Many people die every year because some idiot has too much to drink at the bar and drives home. Yet there is a parking lot at every bar. Isn't that like putting a gun in the hands of a killer. Now I am not saying that Firearms need to be banned in anyway. Though I do agree with thorough back round checks, and waiting periods.

Those are a few of my thoughts but I don't want to start any issues here

One thing I've learned about this furm is everyone here is pretty cool headed and open to an intelligent discussion so I don't think you have to worry about "stirring the pot".

As for drunk driving, I agree completely. I always insist on a designated driver and if I'm going drinking that night the carry piece goes straight into the safe on my way out the door and never leaves the house.

Ohio doesn't even allow firearms in businesses. Concealed or not, it isn't to be taken inside. The problem is that people do get drunk, and they do take knives and guns with them to the bars.
