Well, I have ended up going with Avast. Easy install, small footprint, and it seems to work quite well. I hadn't downloaded the mail from my 12 year old email account in nearly a month, and after I installed Avast and downloaded that account, it detected and stopped about 20 virii. I haven't taken a look at the log to see what kind they were, but it makes me more confident that it stopped them.

Thanks for all the recommendations.

I am just making this thread so i can find it later. AVG is giving me fits at the moment. 99% sure I got infected and want to give avast a try before reinstall. Spybot says I am clean but I can tell something is fishy with my browser.

Grab superantispyware free, and if that doesn't find anything, get combofix (use the guide).

I've been using Avast! Free for a couple of weeks now because I finally got tired of AVG Free's update woes. Got to the point I couldn't even manually update it! (Man I love sugar wafers. I know I'm A horrible Diabetic but there's nothing better than sugar cookies when the ol' blood sugar drops below 60 mg/dl!)

So far, so good. Little disconcerting when it decides to talk to me after updates or when it finds something it doesn't like but other than that, it's a good program. Just doesn't catch spyware and overall a little clunky to use IMO but so far it does the job and it's free.

Oh but it's awesome. I've had a few PC's that were completely screwed up and combofix was able to restore them to working great again.

I found out today that apparently you can download new voices for avast!

I swear, if I owned a firearm, I would have blasted the hell out of my doorway as it sounded like the Avast guy was standing right behind me the first time he talked.

Just for fun, I "accidentally" forget to mention the talking to friends/clients when I install the software. No telling how many have come back and mentioned the dude.

Dan,

I saw somthing about combofix where you need to post the scan report to some forums and such. Is that required to run a scan and fix?

It's like a HiJackThis log, it basically lets other people that know what is on the list, and lets them decide if it's actually gotten rid of everything or not.

It's not required and you can run the scan without doing that (if you're happy that it's gotten everything).

I just got done running combofix... found 3 little buggers spybot missed. Its great I can use my browers and I actully go to where I clicked not some random website. It was also preventing AVG to update and would cause a crash everytime I tried to run a scan. Well AVG is working fine now also.

Thanks so much Dan - what a great headach saver :drinkers:
