Newegg Suspends $50 Gift Cards?

Post by Apoptosis »

I just got this e-mail from a reader of LR and I thought I'd pass it along as it may impact a number of you:
NewEgg.com $50 rebate gift cards are suspended due to the bankruptcy of its rebate processor. NewEgg is not informing its customers of this suspension until after the customer has waited 8 weeks for their NewEgg gift card. Specifically, this problem exists on their gift card offer on the purchase of Microsoft Vista Ultimate w/SP1 operating system as a part of a combo offer extending through 01/31/2009. Let the buyer beware! Perhaps it is time to submit a complaint of fraud to the California Attorney General's Office? Is NewEgg near bankruptcy too? Is the goodwill & reputation of NewEgg so meaningless that its owners no longer care about us consumers?
I responded to the reader with "have a source for this?" and they responded:
I used the NewEgg chat line tonight (01/15/2009) to inquire about my NewEgg $50 Rebate Gift Card because I have been waiting for it for 8 weeks. I talked to Ruby on the chat line & she stated that the Gift Cards are suspended indefinitely because of the bankruptcy of the rebate processor CPG. The NewEgg offer was on a combo deal when purchasing the MS Vista Ultimate w/SP1 operating system & a motherboard between 11/01/2008 & 01/31/2009. I have a copy of the chat line conversation. (See attachment)
His attachment looks good, so I thought I'd give everyone here a heads up as you might have issues in the weeks to come with the gift card.

Yet another reason I don't count on rebates. Hard to believe something like this would happen to NewEgg. I wonder where the fault lies, NewEgg or the rebate company. NewEgg obviously should have notified it's customers.

Its the rebate companies fault, but i agree that Newegg should send an email out to all its members notifying them of this!

Mike

It is strange how a rebate company can mishandle that much money that it goes bankrupt...sheesh!

Yep, its reminiscent of the recent bailouts. I'm baffled that banks can mishandle money so poorly as to need 700B in bailouts! Anyone that treats their business like a casino, and loses, should suffer the consequences, restructure, and learn from it. You can bet the Federal Reserve had a hand in this.

I don't count on rebates either, but that doesn't change the fact that I've received 100% of the rebates I've sent over the past 10+ years. Then again, I only deal with reputable companies and resellers.

I agree that Newegg should contact every customer immediately and inform them of this mishap, and possibly offer them an alternative solution to the rebate.

Personally, I'm getting tired of Newegg.com

If I can find the parts at ncixus.com, I'll purchase from there.

I'm just burned out with the piss poor service. At least twice a year, they've had problems getting my CC to run, each time the bank tells me they never attempted to authorize it. Last time, they brushed me off saying everything was Ok. It didn't ship. I then contacted them the next day and they manually ran the CC again. It then went, but they refused to upgrade shipping. So instead of getting it on Friday, I had to wail till Monday. Grrrrrr....

I'm really disappointed with this as I was hoping to use the rebate card to purchase some more storage.

Has anyone gotten any more information from Newegg about this?

I've purchased over $35,000.00 worth of PC hardware & software from NewEgg in the past three years 2006-2008.
Service was great and never had a problem up until now. I purchased Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit OEM version operating system
back in November 2008 along with a complete configuration for a Gaming Desktop: Motherboard, CPU, PSU, Hard Drives, Case, RAM, etc.
on a single sales order from Newegg.com and sent in the $50.00 Rebate/Gift Card Form with UPC etc. for the $50 NewEgg gift card.
http://images10.newegg.com/uploadfilesf ... 09kl09.pdf
Never received any notification, apology or communication stating the rebate/gift card processing company went bankrupt.
NewEgg should of stepped up to the plate and handled it. NewEgg has lost my my business.

Part of the above purchase was MSI N9600GT 512M OC Video Card with a $30.00 Mail In Rebate. Never received that as well.

Just in the last 30 days my debit card and another credit card that I have used to make purchases exclusively on NewEgg.com have been
used fraudulently by someone attempting to make purchases online.
If you store your Credit or Debit Card numbers/info on your NewEgg Account? You might want to login and delete delete delete.

That's been known for long time for any website my friend..never save your info online..sucks it happened to you but I highly doubt newegg did both of your cards in..mainly since I heard(not read tho) about how visa/mastercard had a major breach very recently..and on top of that, I doubt that you use both cards just for newegg (thats how i interpreted it)unless you have more than 2..and if you do, then I advise to stop using more than 1 online

typically I have one debit card tied to a checking account I use exclusively for online purchases. When I am ready to buy I transfer funds to cover the purchase.

Exactly! And what's more important is that the card is from another bank or service that has no ties to your main banking accounts what so ever.

Again, never store your banking information on-line with places like hotels, airlines, NewEgg, Tiger-Direct, Directron, or any other retailer for that matter.

If the rebate isn't INSTANT, I avoid the purchase, unless the rebate is so minor and there is still savings over-all with the price.

I've never had any fraud on my credit card in the past 10 years I've had it, and it's been stored at god knows how many sites - if people think they're going to charge a bunch of stuff on my car, that's fine, I'll claim fraud, and I'll also spend a bit my self and say the criminal did it ;) .

LMAO! I agree!

All kidding aside though, I have one credit card that I use at SELECT sites. For the sites I don't trust, I use my paypal account.

By the way, I also have credit monitoring and identity theft protection, so not as much to worry about.

yea having the monitoring is a darn good thing to do. my card company called me not after 5 minutes after i placed a nice sized order and they were like" do you know this happened?"... luckily it was me that time so it was cool to see them on top of things instead of just laugh at me

speaking of which..this thread was a bad luck charm..got an email from my bank stating that there was some irregular activity..so i review my statement and found that over $600($403 and some $80 charges all at same place) was charged at a place that was oddly on a road I drove on today but never stopped there..a casino is near that place but I've never been there either..i only used $20 for the store and $10 for gas today and I see all that....moral of this is....get the monitoring :) without it I wouldn't have known for a while and would really have been up $h*t's Creek..i got it handled though..new card is on the way..i've got the monitoring and my picture on my card..yet they still somehow got the damn thing going..Maybe John Conner's doing it (if ya'll remember his lil toy in Terminator 2)

"easy money"

Well now that I got everything taken care of..it really screwed up a few things for me..my car payment was made right before if not the same time i got jacked so after I got confirmation that my payment went thru I found out today that my car payment did NOT go thru..explains the return fees that came today which have been removed/credited back due to that fraud..so now not only do I have to redo the payment(which is cool since i got the money back) but I have another one due on Friday..all this because some wanna-be Endo-skeleton Cybernetic Organism went after a John Connor wanna-be :axe:
