Very few desktops and even fewer laptops have eSATA ports, but for those lucky enough to have a system with one you can embrace the OCZ Throttle eSATA drive. The OCZ Throttle eSATA drive is one of the very first eSATA Flash drives available on the market today.The OCZ Throttle’s eSATA interface offers an incredible performance speeds of up to 90MB/second read and 30MB/sec write.

The 32GB OCZ Throttle eSATA drive is thicker than the 32GB OCZ ATV USB drive as seen in the picture above, but still looks like a normal USB key. Since the drive needs both USB and eSATA drives don't expect any smaller form factor to come till the USB port is no longer needed. Since the powered eSATA ports are not too common it is likely that this will be a years and by that time USB 3.0 will have come out. For those that are curious USB 2.0 has a maximum transfer speed of 60MB/sec and eSATA tops out at 300MB/Sec. The upcoming USB 3.0 standard is coming out during the middle of this year and will feature up to 625MB/Sec transfer speeds.

Silly question, but could you plug this directly into the boards SATA connector or is eSATA a diffrent connector?

yeah SATA and eSATA are different... most cases that have eSATA on the front panel use an adapter cable that goes to a regular SATA header though. If you look at the connector picture the eSATA header is just straight - http://www.legitreviews.com/article/877/2/ and you know from using SATA that it has the 90 degree turn at the end, so they are not plug-in-play.

Seems like if Power Over eSATA ever became a reality, then this drive would be a contender, but I just don't see having to mess with a cable and have eSATA available being worth it. With USB 3.0 set to show up later this year, I just don't see eSATA lasting as long as Firewire on the PC.

So now when will SATA4 come out? I can't imagine that SATA will just be allowed to die off.

i never once said that SATA would die off... I just don't think that eSATA Flash drives will catch on with a faster USB 3.0 specification coming out on mainstream products in a year from now. Needing a clunky USB cable to power eSATA and a 70% price premium is enough reason to cause most people to skip over these drives I have a feeling.

This would make for a great ready-boost drive if you were working on a computer that lacked the ram, though if it has an eSATA port it probably has plenty of ram.

yeah, if somebody has an esata port chances are there not lacking any ram
