I remember when my friend bought his 1st Apple 2c. That was when the 5.25 was state of the art. I was married when the 20GB was huge. I remember when I built the computer that I fixed up for my GF...I had a 200 GB.... that was HUGE.....now I can't believe it.... I just picked up my 1st TB...... it's in a 2 TB external mirror. I'm breaking it up into 2 1TB Drives. It will last me a few years I HOPE . $165 for that is amazing.

My dad had a few dozen 8" floppies until 2001. He sold them for 1 cent each plus shipping on the internet.

Amazing how Tandy (Radio Shack) played in that event back in 1988.

Maybe you sould start with the punch cards, It's kind-a cool the transition form punch cards to SSD drives.

Almost forgot you sould mention the storage mechanism of the first computer ABC( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atanasoff% ... y_Computer ) - It has a weird simi-DRAM simi-Cilinder storage.

I had a programming professor who brought in a ton of unused punch cards that he has kept all these years. That must have been an interesting era for computing.

Punch cards weren't data storage necessarily, it was in an input system. They did keep the punch cards though, so I guess it was storage of input data.

my first computer was an apple II...still have it..I don't think the floppy disks survived tho..been in storage shed now for 10+ years..but its still visible in the window I supposed I should go look lol...My dad had a mean collection of LaserDiscs..I think the last movie I watched on it was Terminator 2 lol..I can only remember one place in town that actually carried LD's back then....until reading this, I would've imagined LaserDisc's holding an obscene amount of data with their physical size (compared to those years anyway)

nice write up skier.. this is the first time i have seen it. I definitely remember paying $400-$500 to "upgrade" to 256mb of RAM, and telling my friends "its got a 3 GB hard drive, i could use this thing the rest of my life and never fill it up" lol ahhh the good ol days.

An old teacher of mine actually had a set of these and the machine to read it, when i first was told i said to him "Why dont you sell it?" He said it had more of a sentimental value to him than money! He is an absolute genius of a teacher..

Thanks for the post, way looking to see how fast technology advances so I can compare how long my current SSD will last. I see for HDD it took 4 years to go from 750GB to 2TB(2005 to 2009), so I guess I should be OK on wear and tear before I need to update again.

also, I notice you don't list cassette tapes for storage. I remember back in early 80's when floppies and HDD weren't even supported by most computers and very expensive. You lost your program you spent hours typing in if you shut off your computer. The only cheap solution was cassette tapes back then. I can remember going to Radio Shack and buying my second computer, a TRS-80 Color Computer and making sure I bought the cassette player and cable to connect to my serial port. After replacing my Timex Sinclair 1000 and having to retype all my programs all the time was too much for me to do on a bigger machine(16k vs 4k), and with 16 colors vs 1!! lol

Strong bump but very cool read. I remember going through a couple of those things like using Floppy disks... then buying USBs in 128mb size for $100 (with $20 rebate omfg so cheap, everyone rushed to stores to grab it). My 1 TB ext hard drive that cost around $250 and I have yet to buy SSDs, need to wait for those prices to go down first : )
