It was replaced by the E7300 which has now been replaced by the E7400. With the release of the E5200 at similar clockspeed (E5200 2.50GHz vs E7200 2.53GHz), there really isn't much feature and performance disparity between the two processors to justify price difference. There's also the less expensive E5300 which has a faster clock, albeit with less cache.

Current price list (OEM per 1000 tray):
E7500 2.93GHz $133
E7400 2.80GHz $113
E7300 2.66GHz $113
E7200 2.53GHz $113
E5400 2.70GHz $84
E5300 2.60GHz $74
E5200 2.50GHz $64

the problem with the E5200 is that it has half the cache, i think they should have left the E7200 alone, and just dropped prices across the board, if they keep them in production, there will still be plenty of a market for them, but i guess they don't want to waste production costs and force people to get better chips :\

I think Intel's trying not to have an overlap in prices among its different offerings. They're keeping the different series in their specific price ranges. Besides, it's not like they increased the cost of entry for the E7000 series. The E7400 is selling for the same price I bought my E7200 for just a couple of months ago.

E5200 has 2mb cache.
E7200 has 3mb cache.

Other than that, nothing is different.

Unless you're talking about the type of processor, the E5200 is a Wolfdale Dual-core Pentium chip and the E7200 is a Wolfdale Core 2 Duo chip.

Splitting hairs to some people, but the performance really swings to the favor of the E7xxx chips

It won't swing towards the E5200, but in some areas performance is quite close considering the price. The E5200 is $80 while the E7200 is $120. It's doubtful that Intel would decrease prices of the Core 2 Duo to encroach on Pentium Dual-Core territory. If they lowered the price, then who's gonna buy the Pentium Dual-Cores? Might as well get rid of the line altogether.
