-Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) on Tuesday announced the date the latest version of the Windows operating system, Windows 7, will be in general commercial availability: Oct. 22.
The milestone comes amid intense pressure on the world's largest software maker to reverse its perceived missteps with Windows 7's predecessor, Vista, and as evidence mounts that computer makers are increasingly considering alternatives to its ubiquitous operating system.

The big question though is how much did you buy it for?Skippman wrote:Well, sure am glad I bought Vista Ultimate....

And the even bigger question is: Windows 7: how many versions and how much?

I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, but can you turn off the eye candy? I want to know how slow a PC will actually run it, how far can it be stripped down? Is there anyway to knock a couple GB off the install size? 20GB seems to me a little on the stupid side, I know space is cheap, but come on 20GB.

Yes, you can turn off Aero and save some system resources. I have run Vista Ultimate 32 bit and Windows 7 32 & 64 bit and Windows 7 seems to use less RAM and for me just plain runs a bit snappier.bubba wrote:I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, but can you turn off the eye candy? I'm in the process of running a battery test on my 1000HE and let's just say 7 is blowing everything out of the water with it's power saving features!

I have Windows Vista 7 on my Netbook and it's great... If a 1.6GHz Atom processor doesn't bog on it that says a ton...Illuminati wrote:I'm in the process of running a battery test on my 1000HE and let's just say 7 is blowing everything out of the water with it's power saving features!

The system requirements published for the official Release Candidate of Windows 7 are the following:bubba wrote:what about a 900 celly?
* 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
* 1 GB of RAM (32-bit)/2 GB of RAM (64-bit)
* 16 GB of available disk space (32-bit)/20 GB (64-bit)
* DirectX 9 graphics device with Windows Display Driver Model 1.0 or higher driver
Not sure the 900MHz will do that well on it.

Yeah, but I was wondering if anyone in their testing has run it on something that slow.
I haven't tried it due to the fact I dont have a big enough SSD for my netbook.

Upgrade but the upgrade is really the full version, you just need to prove you have a previous version.

I'll wait until it hits the college bookstore/software department.
Me: University of Houston - Windows XP Pro $7
Cousin for me: Texas A&M - Vista Ultimate $7
So in keeping with the current trend I'll get another cousin to pick me up Windows 7 for $7.
