The Movie District 9 - What do you think?

Post by Apoptosis »

Anyone one looking forward to this movie coming out on August 14th?
Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens' welfare - they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens' awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable - he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

Release Date: 14 August 2009 Genre: Sci-Fi Cast: William Allen Young, Robert Hobbs, Sharlto Copley Director: Neill Blomkamp Writer: Neill Blomkamp, Terri Tatchell Studio: Sony Pictures Entertainme..

I've been wondering about this since I saw posters for it at the theater. Figure its going to have all sorts of eye candy in it with it being done by Peter Jackson.

Looks okay, but I am a little leary on how well it will come off. I read an article tha said he spent $30 million on this film. Thats awful cheap! I dont know if that included the actors pays or not.

We shall see - but I am not looking for anything revolutionary.

Looks like a step up from Transmorphers, but I'm not convinced yet. I don't really dig the "raw and gritty" camera style either. I almost got sick watching The Blair Witch Project in the theater and Cloverfield was an improvement but film it the old fashioned way.

So, did anyone go see D9 besides me?
Definitely enjoyed it but, it wasnt what I expected. Which was not a bad thing!
I'm not going to give any of the story away but I will say it focused more on the characters then the action scenes.

B+ to an A!?! For the story line, characters, and action scenes!
Looking forward to the sequel!

You just gave something away, it apparently ends unresolved. Does every "big" movie have to evolve into a freaking trilogy these days? I enjoy most sequels about as much as I enjoy To Be Continued... TV episodes.

I've been in Dallas for the past 5 days, so I wasn't able to make it due to Quakecon...

Anyone interested in seeing it here in STL?

I thought all new movies evolved into sequels and prequels!?!
Another slight give away....I could see this movie going both ways!

I really liked this flick, 8.8 out of 10. The lead was pretty good being that he has no acting experience. Plus it was made with only 30 million compared to G.I. Joes 175.
