Free burning software for Vista

Post by unfaithfulsfan »

Discovered my Nero6 software won't work with Vista. I need to copy a DVD my brother burned for me of HBO's True Blood-- second half of the first season. I suppose I could just watch in on my computer but it's not the same, y'know?

I haven't tried Nero 7 although we have a buttload of them laying around the shop. Anybody know whether that works? Or any other ideas for a good free utility for copying DVDs. How about DVDShrink? does it work with Vista? Just happened to think of it.

I'm so bummed because I accidentally blew away my XP install along with all my dvd conversion software like DVD Santa, which I paid for and cannot prove because I have no idea where the receipt is on my computer. For all I know I blew it away with that also.

Arrgh.

What are the files? Or is this a direct Disc to Disc Copy? Try ImgBurn

I am using Nero 6 or 7 (not sure which but it is one or the other) in Vista x64. Try the Nero 7 disk.

Does it allow you to install and then give you an error while running? Did you try compatibility mode?

I installed 6 and tried copy dvd-dvd and it gave me an error stating that this version of Nero Burning ROM is incompatible with Vista. Use another version.

I didn't even think about compatibility mode #-o but I am on a lot of drugs...... 8-[ plus I was still out of it from being allergic to silver. I'll tinker around with compatibility settings tonight and if that doesn't work, I'll try v 7 and see it that works.

Thanks a ton for the help!

Well, I haven't tried burning a DVD-ROM like that before, so I don't know if it works on my system. Keep us posted though!

Could try any of these but I highly recommend CDBurnerXP and ImgBurn (ImgBurn is my current fav  ). Both are great pieces of free software.

Thanks. Now at the risk of seeming (seeming, hell!) greedy, any free options for converting from AVI to DVD format? I'd used DVD Santa, which I paid for, but now have lost it and cannot prove I bought it so I'll have to buy it again. I download all my movies in avi because of the smaller file size then convert it to DVD format and then burn it.

Thanks all.

I use dvdflick to create a dvd out of an .avi. takes 30-60mins depending on the file.

ffmpeg is just about the most powerful piece of video conversion software known to man (well, this man at least) but it is a command line tool and thus not very user friendly. There are a few guis for it but I've always just used the cli. If you'd rather have a gui these two seem promising: avanti and ffe

As for feeling guilty about using free software, don't! A lot of people dedicate themselves to Free Open Source Software because they believe people should have access to good, free software that isn't locked down and controlled by a greedy corporation out for the money. If you still feel guilty about it, many projects still need help whether it's with a few lines of code or a bit of cash or even just some testing, every bit helps [/soapbox]

Thanks for the heads up XstollieX, I havent' heard of that one before.

As for using free stuff, I don't feel guilty at all, just could never find a free one that converted avi's to dvd's worth a crap. I've just about worn DVD shrink out but can't use it for my avi files or haven't been able to figure it out, anyway.

Thanks everyone!!
