Question about upgrading

Post by yurchie »

I'm thinking about buying a new motherboard, and I'm sure I can spend about $100-150 on it. What I have now is an Asus P4SD, which came with my system (I didn't have a chance to custom build).

I have a 2.8 P4 Northwood and I was wondering if anyone could recommend something for me to buy? I've looked on newegg and other places but I'm not really sure on what I should get. I use my computer for gaming/word processing/irc/etc, so it gets pretty heavy usage most of the time.

Any particular reason for wanting a same-socket mobo upgrade at this point? That $100-$150 is going to result in nominal real world performance differences as opposed to applying those funds to other areas of your system (bigger, faster hard drive, updated graphics card, etc).

In any event, I'd look at:

Asus P4P800 SE Springdale - $96 shipped
Abit IC7-G MaxII Canterwood - $141 shipped

If you're comfortable with online trading (such as the Legit Trader forum right here on LR), you could post a WTB (Want To Buy) thread looking for a decent Springdale (i865PE) or Canterwood (i875P).

Finally, if you're into overclocking and have the RAM to accomodate, I had great success on my P4P800 / 2.4C combo back in the day:

Well, I have good hard drives already. I've a got a seagate ata 180gig and a western digital 115gig or something like that.

My graphics card is decent enough for me to play HL2 at the moment, I've got a 9600Pro. Not planning to upgrade that for awhile.

I do need to upgrade my RAM, but I'm happy with my infineon right now so I'll wait.

The problem is that this motherboard doesn't support SATA or RAID and for that reason I had to get an ATA seagate instead of a SATA. Also, support for the P4SD is really really bad and I want something that I can use for awhile without fear of upgrading and lack of drivers.

Thanks for the suggestions :)
