What's the best video card for me?

Post by jiffypop »

I need some help with choosing a video card. I would like it to be PCI-Express. I won't be using it for games, but I will be watching DVDs. Thanks for any recommendations!

ATI PCI-Express X800's go for $140 refurb... should be able to pick one up around that on ebay. I'd aim for the ATI X800 or the nVidia Geforce 6600 series if you can find one in that price range. (It will be tough, but can be done.)

If your not looking to game much at all take a look at my 6200TC review. Its very inexpencive and offers some decent features.

Yeah, that or an ATI X300 or X600 would do you just fine. An X600 would even be overkill for just watching DVD's

You don't need an X800 to watch DVDs. I'd say save your money. The x300-x600 would be more than enough for what you want to do. Geforce 6200 is also at a really good price.

Just save your money and buy a 7800GTX. Not only will you get the best performance but you'll also get +10 points to your e-Ego

Don't spend the money on a 7800gtx, its a waste of money. Get a x800 xt so you can overclock it when you play games

Not even lite gaming at all?
In that case the 6200s will be the best choice due to its on-chip MPEG-2 decoder.(Which needs to be enabled through nV DVD player thingy)

For simple DVD playback and minor gaming, seriously consider Infinite's 6200 article. I think its more than sufficient for what you want to do. If you like ATI flavored cards, go with the X300 or at the most the X600. another NVIDIA card to consider are the 6600 GT.....It makes absolutely no sense for you to spend more than $125-150 on a video card

I got my ATI RADEON 9550 for $120 (US) off eBay brand new. I know it's not the best, but it's better than my old one.

Absolutely. I have no idea why people are recommending the most expensve cards on the market! You can watch DVD's and play some games with only 32mb of video memory. As said many times over, Those 6200 TC's seem to come at a decent price, or you could look at the X300, you really DO NOT need anything more than that unless you want to get more serious into gaming.

I only had 16mb of onboard video on my old PIII laptop and I played lots of games on it!

He needs PCI-Express, I believe the 9550 only comes in an AGP flavor.
