2x1GB kit recommendations

Looking to move up from 2x512 for my shuttle SN25P. Any recommendations? Leaning toward Corsair XMS PRO Cas2 at this point. Currently have Kingston TCCD(?) 2-2-2-5 kit.

Other specs:
FX-53 clawhammer
7800GTX KO
74gb raptor
250 hitachi sata
200 WD IDE

What the heck do you do that requires that much memory?

Anyways, 1gb sticks often end up having slower timings and speed due to the high density, something you might want to think about.

If i'm wrong, sorry, but thats what I've been told.

my next system will have 2x1GB because I'm a Java Developer... with all the applications I have up for database connections, testing the app, coding apps, the work request system, Outlook, repository system, etc... I use up my current 2x512mb when I first sit down at my computer at the beginning of the day!

... but I agree with deadly-app for a typical home PC.

I mean, by the looks of his system, hes no lightweight. But if it is for gaming, I think 2 gigs is overkill. Only visual editing, and stuff like compiling, encoding, etc, requires that much.

Wow, and Kingston RAM with TCCD chips, no less! You're right, he's no lightweight, lol. I would have to agree with everyone else and say 2 GB is overkill. Sounds like you got a good setup with the KHX 1GB kit with TCCD chips. You can squeeze some pretty agressive timings out of those types of memory modules. But, personally, I like OCZ, as do a few others in here (especially Gold VX, but I personally like the Platinum Rev. 2). Your video card has me drooling BTW, rofl (too bad you had to pay the "FX tax" with your CPU though, but still a damn good chip).

I need 2 gig mainly for BF2. Without it, round starts are 2 minute HDD lag slideshows, even with the raptor, when you bump shadows and lighting up to high. I'm also trying to future proof this box as much as possible, and since it is limited to two RAM slots, 2x1GB seems to be the way to go.

OCZ Platinum PC3200 2gb kit 2-3-2-5 - $239 shipped (after $30 mail-in-rebate)

The rebate is good until Sept 11. It's a pretty attractive price for what you're getting. Sell your coveted TCCD sticks and it brings the price down even further.

The Revision 2 doesn't come in 2gb kits (2x1gb), so he'd need to buy two kits and run 4x512mb. If going that route, it'd be simplier to just pick up another kit of Kingston's TCCDs (though I highly favor OCZ myself).

Keep in mind however that on pre-Venice cores (such as the one Thor is running) he'll find his RAM downclocking to DDR333 on 4 sticks. He'll also likely have to play with the latencies and command rate. Getting 4x512mb sticks to work properly is going to completely negate a low latency purchase.

very true, however I was just comparing it to the kit he has now, timings and real-world performance. Anandtech said they got a 40% overclock out of the 1 GB PC3200 kit. Is BF2 really that demanding (I really don't know)?

BF2 is a RAM hog. Generally speaking though, 2gb is not going to come into play all that often (there are certainly exceptions, depending on what a particular user runs).

With respect to overclocking, it's something to take into consideration if he plans on OCing his FX-53, or already does. However, his Kingston TCCD's should have plenty of OCing headroom in them as well. There wouldn't be much benefit in swapping one TCCD kit for another (or for a TCC5 kit nowadays). He's also likely going to run into a roadblock trying to OC on 4x512mb of downclocked RAM. I just don't see any other logical choices besides:

1) Running 2x1gb (2gb kit)
2) Staying with the existing 2x512mb TCCDs

I guess an argument could be made for upgrading the CPU to a later revision (Venice/San Diego+), but this begins to get unnecessarily costly for the sake of moving to 2gb...

yeah, he already paid the FX tax, so it would just be throwing unnecessary money at the problem; so the problems stand: 1. BF2 is a RAM hog; 2. running 4*512 would more than likely necessitate raising timings, which would counteract the benefits of running 2GB; and 3. from what I understand, 1GB sticks don't run well due to their high density (you couldn't get the timings needed to show a benefit). You have to choose the lesser of the evils I guess, but I'm just a fan of the Platinum Rev. 2 modules.....but I guess it would be wise to get a matched pair of memory modules from OCZ, maybe in PC4200 or 4800, depending if the motherboard can support the jump. If it does, then maybe I could justify the jump to 1GB*2, but I would go with active cooling (waterblocks) and try to drop the timings lower than what they come stock (I believe it's 5-5-5-10 or 5-5-5-12). So many choices, in need of so much mental resources, lol.

4x512 is not an option, shuttle only has two RAM slots.

Ended up going with the corsair XMS cas 2 pro kit.

Seriously, I have the OCZ platinum DDR600 stuff and it is AWESOME!!! I am VERY happy with my purchase (especially since I got it for $210). They easily run up to 210mhz (and probably more) with 2-2-2 timings and are GUARUNTEED to do 300mhz all on stock 2.9v which most any motherboard can supply. Plus it looks frickin SWEET! What more would you want?!
