WD Hard Drives: Caviar Blue OR Caviar Black OR ...

Post by lordvic »

So I can't decide which one to get. I'm planning to have Windows 7 freshly installed on it. So here are the drives I'm looking at from a local store (I live in Canada so its CDN $):

500Gb Western Digital Caviar Blue 3.5 7200RPM 16 MB Cache SATA Internal HD 3 Yr Warranty WD5000AAKS >>$64

500Gb Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 Single Platter Drive 3.5 7200RPM 16 MB Cache SATA Internal HD 3 Yr Warranty ST3500418AS >>$64

500Gb Western Digital Caviar Green IntelliPower 5400-7200RPM 3.5 7200RPM 16 MB Cache SATA Internal HD 3 Yr Warranty WD5000AADS >>$59

500Gb Western Digital Caviar Black 7200RPM 3.5 7200RPM 32 MB Cache SATA Internal HD 5 Yr Warranty WD5001AALS >>$72

I was Think of getting The Caviar Black or the Caviar Blue. Not sure about the Seagate and the WD green. Noise should not be an issue (since one of my case fans already hella loud) but it would bea treat to have no more sound louder than my fan. Write/Read speed speed are all pretty good, but the Caviar Black has 32MB cache :) . Any opinions?

well, if you have any fans at all, you prolly won't hear a hard drive unless its 10k, i'd go for the black since its only $8 more 8)

but i don't know Hard Drives that well as far as performance comparisons, i DO know the Cache doesn't make a huge difference, but there are gains

I just installed W7 on a 1 TB Caviar Black and it's a bit faster than the 500 GB WD Blue I had before. You can't go too wrong with it for the money.

If you're planning on using this as your daily (performance) rig then go with the black drive as it is Western Digital's performance line, the only better drives from them would be their VelociRaptors... and those are much, much more expensive.

I vote black as well... It's worth the extra price.

I've got a Green 1TB, which has been running great for about a year. I would still recommend the Black, though as it is faster.
