VMWare Hard drive
VMWare Hard drive
I have three or 4 virtual machines, one is a 32bit Windows 7 OS that I originally set up for testing and didnt make the hard drive very big. I now want to use it for school and need more space on the hard drive. I looked in the settings for the hard drive but didnt see anything that would let me increase the size of the hard drive. Does anyone know how to do this?

Re: VMWare Hard drive
Not sure about VMWare Server, but with workstation and ESX you can "expand" the HDD
Goto "Edit Virtual Machine Settings" then select the HDD and there should be a "Utilities" option on the right.
Just click "Expand" and re-size the HDD to whatever you want. You can then create a new partition on the HDD or use any other hdd utility to resize the current partition to fill the newly resized HDD
VMWare knows nothing of partitions etc.

I use vmware a lot, both ESXi and workstation, both at home and in work
Re: VMWare Hard drive
odd when I went on on of my VM's to check what you said it was an option- my win7 64bit VM, but when I went into the Win7 32bit VM that I needed to increase the disk size it is not an option. so I just added another virtual hard drive to the system.

Re: VMWare Hard drive
sounds like you "Pre-allocated" the space when creating the HDD for win7 32 bitsmack323 wrote:odd when I went on on of my VM's to check what you said it was an option- my win7 64bit VM, but when I went into the Win7 32bit VM that I needed to increase the disk size it is not an option. so I just added another virtual hard drive to the system.
Re: VMWare Hard drive
ok i thought i did but i guess not. it says disk space is not preallocated for this hard disk.. now the extra hard drive made is gone also

Re: VMWare Hard drive
Sounds like a software issue with VMware itselfsmack323 wrote:ok i thought i did but i guess not. it says disk space is not preallocated for this hard disk.. now the extra hard drive made is gone also
You should check the logs in "C:\Users\Your PC username\AppData\Local\VMware\vpx"
Re: VMWare Hard drive
I checked the folder for the machine and could see the drive- but when i started up workstation it didnt show up. I deleted it from the folder and made a new one. Then I turned on the machine and disk managed/formatted it right away.. all seems to be good now. now i am just waiting for visual studio to finish installing. hopefully this is the last of my issues with this VM.
