Location-based Social Networking: Foursquare Ground-rules

Post by Illuminati »

Foursquare is really starting to make the headlines when it comes to location-based social networking. Foursquare users can 'check-in' virtually when they physically step into a public location in order to let others (their friends) know they are there. While Foursquare is obviously not for those who oppose the idea of their exact whereabouts being published on the internet, for those of us embracing or experimenting with various forms of social networking, Foursquare seems to be the most natural progression of social networking as we know it. Now you can actually take a chance to bump into people with the same interests. CNN blogger Dermot Waters is a Foursquare user and has made a list of ground-rules on how to effectively use Foursquare.

1. It’s all about Serendipity, baby
To me, Foursquare is all about serendipity. It’s all about discovering that my friends are at the same place as me … or that I just missed them. Or discovering how much you can learn about a friend by the types of places they frequent (and sometimes wanting to join them). It’s about battling out a friend or a foursquare nemesis for a mayorship of your local bar.

Hehe... I thought I'd give it a try. The Foursquare concept seems to be the next level of social networking that could rival facebook... although this blog indicates Facebook has plans to add a location-based aspect as well. I think they will pretty much have to. It is probably a matter of time before these new social sites also start incorporating a GeoCaching aspect as well.
