AMD Cancels Retail Phenom II X4 960T Thuban Quad Core CPUs

Post by Apoptosis »

AMD sent out an e-mail today letting the press know that we shouldn't expect to see any retail Phenom II X4 960T Thuban quad-core processors being sold individually on the retail market. These were very interested parts as the engineering samples that were available could be unlocked to become six-core processors. If we had to guess these processors will be available only in OEM systems on motherboards that don't have core unlocking technology in the BIOS. This is a big let down as it could have easily been the best price versus performance processor on the market for AMD.
I’ve been asked the question about whether there will be a Phenom II X4 960T “Thuban” quad-core by enough individuals, that I think it is a good idea to proactively share the answer to everyone. While there are indeed engineering CPU samples floating around of a 4-core Thuban 960T, I do not expect that processor will be released for general availability. Perhaps it may make its way to OEMs by special request, but that remains to be seen.

at least this way they are forcing people to get what they pay for, instead of hoping they might be lucky and get 6, and then being let down by it not unlocking

I say its better off

My hopes of getting a cheap hex core, ruined. But I guess it's for the better. You pay for what you get.

Hm this means that Core Unlocking and ACC just got a bit less useful..

The Phenom II X6 1055T for $149.99 after rebate on launch day was the AMD CPU buy of the year if you ask me! That was the hidden gem in my book! Even today at Newegg they are up to $205.

how? the 1055T is $200 vs 980X $1100 seems cheaper to me, yeah it competes with the i7 quad performance-wise, which it is still cheaper than, and its 6 cores, not 4 +4threads. my next cpu WILL be Thuban(and not far down the road either thanks to the great price its at)

not to mention the 1035T, dont have much info on that guy except a couple HWBOT submissions

You guys are forgetting I'm Canadian. Things are more expensive up here.

Tiger Direct didn't have it for $150AR as they refused to sell it at that price.

so? the 980x is still $1100 up there, so the 1055 is still a metric sh|t ton cheaper

AMD Phenom II X4 960T not cancelled
Written by Slobodan Simic

Should be available, eventually

According to our info, AMD's Thuban based Phenom II X4 960T is not canceled but rather just delayed. Unfortunately, our sources were not clear about the specific date but were pretty sure that it will come eventually.

As you may remember, Legitreviews.com reported yesterday that the "unlocking-friendly" Phenom II X4 960T will be limited to OEMs and probably paired up with a non-unlockable motherboard. Our sources suggested that it is a mere delay and that the noted CPU will indeed be available.

We are not sure if AMD will change something and make it less "unlockable" in that process, or when it will actually be available, but for now, we are hearing that it will be available in retail, sooner or later.

Any truth to this? Here is the link as well: http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/18809/1/

Our news post has a direct quote from AMD:

AMD is a publicly traded company, so what they say must be factually true or they risk a whole bunch of stuff with the SEC and with civil suits... I stand by our post that was made 2 days before that rumor site tried to get some traffic with a new spin on this story... rubbish

It was not my intent to question the integrity of the post. Consider me a noob as far as yellow journalistic forum sites are concerned. I know now to file that site in the same catagory as the National Enquirer.

Just got this thought. Since Newegg sells OEM CPUs, there's a chance we'll see them on there.
