Skier's First Dry Ice Work Log

Post by skier »

Just gonna let you all see this for now, the project won't happen for another week or two
IMG_0053.JPG
I think you can get plenty of info from that one picture ;)

update 9/23
Image

the pipe has a 2"ID, 1/16" thick with a cap brazed on, I'm in the process of making a mount for it
Image
got that nice chunk of copper with the pot so that the chilled alcohol can transfer temp to it, which will allow the pot to cool the CPU for longer without having to use more DICE (ie, give it more mass). the piece of MDF there is an early pic of my trial mount, the corners of the square mark LGA775 mounting holes

you can tell why it is a 'trial' mount
Image

update 9/24
used a bit to drill out door handles this time, happens to be the exact same size as the OD
Image
Image
Image
so much better this time, no cracking and just better in every way

Update-II 9/24
Image
Image
mmm fits nicely, notice the AM3 mount holes :D

update 9/25
Image
Image
Image
and OH SHHIIII
Image

Update 10/1
Image
so it's an even 12" from the base to the end

nekked again
Image
Image
Image
different kind of insulation again, working on 3 layers total, all pretty thin
Image

cutting board from walmart: $2.97 = 1x 775, AM3, 1156, and 1366 socket backplates, with leftover.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
finally got the pot off! :D
Image
i'd say it made decent contact

and more random shots

I'll just update this one post and bump as I add stuffs

Must be nice to have CPUs and motherboards to burn (or freeze).

I paid $20 for a 3.4GHz Pentium4 which is the only thing i can bench worry free, that's a $47 mATX motherboard, and only one stick of XMS2 lol

Just curious but what's the goal here? Getting your feet frozen in extreme cooling? Playing around with LN2 or dry ice or both? What are you planning on insulating the socket with, modeling clay?

well my main goal is 5GHz, then 5.8 for P4 551 Gold on the bot. The bigger picture goal is to get experience with DICE, and to move on to freezing my 1055T main system after 2 or 3 sessions with Pentium4 (if I don't kill the 551 after a good session, I will upgrade the dell with it and put the 530 under DICE) then eventually get ahold of Gomeler's F1EE and compare it under DICE and LN2

the board I'm using a POS, but it can take a much higher FSB than the chip can, my main Issue will be memory because as I said I only have a single stick that I can use for benching. The board only has a 3phase PWM with a 4-pin ATX connector -not burly by any means, but has handled a 95w Q8300 @ 410x7.5 for a couple months in a Folding-only box

Just be sure to cool the hell out of the power phases and caps around the socket. Gomeler is the go-to guy for this stuff so you have a good mentor/assistance there.

I have a ball of eraser which I hope is enough to at least what i want to do on the top side of the board

I actually don't need any extra cooling on the PWM or NB, residual temps from the pot should be more than enough because remember I've been running a quad at 410MHz bus @load with this thing for a couple months, 347MHz bus (5.9GHz) should be a walk in the park for the board- I have no idea about the voltage though, never clocked a pentium

bump for pics^^

I do have a water cooling loop for AMD that I have been using, but extreme cooling looks like fun!

haha that works, totally separate one for x58?

just remembered I have to figure out how i'm gonna drill out for the actual mounting screws, gotta pull out the 'ol Bonetrail for a test bed (gonna run that board with my non-working 3870 X2 without heatsinks sometime to see what happens haha) and use the stock AM3 mounting bracket (since the True has its own mount) to get ready for the 1055T down the road (this chip will LOVE Dice, hoping for 5+ without turbo)

its actually a polyester blanket (on my bed), and every single component i've used in the past 2 years has rested on it at one point or another...
