Building a rig for my sister

Post by vbironchef »

She gave me a call and said her old Dell took a dump. I said that I would build one for her. I'm flipping the bill. She works two jobs and takes care of my Mom. I think she deserves it. So these are the parts that I ordered. I have a gtx 250 and a Cooler Master 212 plus CPU cooler lying around that I'm not using so I will use those parts as well. I was trying to keep the rig under 1,000. She is 58 years old and not a gamer. She does video and photo editing. As well as the normal stuff. She does burn dvds for her own personal use. So this is the rig that I am going to build for her. I would like to know if I should put more memory in it, and what do think of the overall build. Thanks in advance, The OS will be win 7 pro.

Question... Why go with the Corsair case and power supply? The case is for "gamers" and the power supply is complete overkill for that build.

I wanted a case that she could add more hard drives in as well as more dvd burners. I wanted to build something that she could expand on according to her needs. Maybe overkill, but she lives in Florida and I live in CA. Don't really want to have her upgrade her power supply anytime soon. As far as the case. I agree. But thats just something I wanted to build in.

Yeah I would have switched that case for a trusty Antec 300 and doubled the ram; or a copy of Windows 7 if you dont have one already.

+1
If she's doing Photo & Video editing more memory would be nice.
Burning DVD's for personal use......Double the Burners!
Antec 300 is a great case for non gamers and less expensive!

Yeah, much as I love the 600T something like the CM690II will get you the drive space, still move some nice air, and free up another 100 for another 2gb RAM.

Instead of adding another 2GB stick of RAM, why not go with 2x4GB modules? Nowadays, I'm seeing 2x4GB DDR3 1333 kits for ~$150. Lynnfield doesn't do triple-channel anyway and there's no benefit to DDR3 1600 RAM unless you're overclocking.

typing faster then I can think, meant another 2x2gb kit like he had listed. That would bring him up to 8gb total. He got what I was trying to say

Yes I did get it right. A total of 8gbs of memory. I went over budget, it's for my sister and she's worth it. :)

   I didn't think the case was so big! The box is huge!!! I might have to rethink this case. Maybe I should give her my Lian-Li b25f case instead. Just rebuild both computers. More work than I wanted to do. What should I do? :-k

I'd give her the Lian-Li. You'll probably get more use out of the Corsair than she would.

That's not going to happen because Natasha doesn't want the case in the house. I am going to put a gtx285 graphic card in it instead of a gts250.

If she's donin more with video and photo editin make sure that her software works in Win7. Else get a good WinXP Pro for her.

Great to hear about upping the memory. All of the editing sure can take up a bunch.

Rig complete! Had to change a few things. I put in a Corsair H50 cpu cooler. Now it has two dvd burners samsung 223l. and a BFG GTX285 graphic card. Windows 7 pro. 8 GB Memory. Went over budget, oh well. I hope she likes it. :drinkers:

I'm sure she will. How are you planning on shipping it? That's where things get dicey. Does she know anything about computers? If she does your best bet is stuffing the interior with stuff to keep the components from shifting during transit. Once she gets it, pop open the side and pull the stuff out, hook it up and be good to go.

I put the rig back into the box that the case came in. I'm not planning on stuffing anything else in the box. I am going to send a another box with the extra parts and software. I am going to send it UPS.

Consider stuffing the inside of the case with newspaper or something else that is static safe so there is no bouncing around when the UPS guy tosses your box around!

IMHO......Better to be safe than sorry!

Rig was delivered today. Everything works and she is very happy. I did not stuff the case with anything. No loose connections, I guess I got lucky.
