Overclocked GeForce GTS 450 Getting ~15k PPD

Post by Apoptosis »

Image

The folding@home performance of the GTS 450 is rather amazing... I switched over to one as I got bored running the GT240 in my Office PC. Now that it's gotten colder I can run F@H without my office getting 85+F during the day. I'm running an overclocked ECS GeForce GTS 450 Black Edition video card that I have manually overclocked faster. I'm using it on my main office PC, which does video & picture editing and is used for most of the day. I also shut down the client for a few minutes here and there when i need to do some tasks on the GPU. Anyway, I hit 14,709 points yesterday. I was amazed by this, cut what amazed me more is that I can't hear the card as the fans are at 30% and the core is a full GPU load and hitting just 37-38C after two days of solid use inside a Corsair 800D PC Case.

Did I mention the card is overclocked? A stock NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 runs at 783MHZ core, 1566MHz shaders, 902MHz memory. I've got mine overclocked to 962MHz core, 1925MHz shaders, 1000MHz memory and to be honest they card might have more as I have pushed it to become unstable yet with F@H.

Just wanted to share with everyone... A GTS 450 has 192 CUDA Cores and when the are overclocked they put down some nice PPD numbers.

1925Mhz shaders! my 460 only has 1600MHz shaders and that's when my GPU is at 800

15k is still crazy, need to check how much my 460 gets with a big OC, because i don't think it can get that high!

post yours up nate because im sure we're all curious just how that compares folding-wise having almost 150 Shader Cores less than mine!

so folding-wise, 460-1024=460-768=450 give or take some frequency

45sec TPF is the best that any GTX 460 can do with the current 912 units, and that's with a monster overclock, so at 51sec TPF the GTS450 is a steal for folding

I might have to pick one of these up for my HTPC, the folding numbers look great and this card can bitstream HD Audio.

Yeah the past 5 days I am getting 15,600 PPD with the GTS 450 and it's running 38C and the GPU fan can't be heard over my CPU water cooling loop.

I was so close to getting a GTS 450 while I was out picking up my CPU....I avoid Microcenter as much as I can because it's just too tempting to spend money there.
Looking at it strictly from a PPD view I might take the CPU back and get a pair of these for just a little more money.

edit: I just read a small discussion about two new projects that are headed to GPU3, P6800 and P6811. Looks like the GTS 450 & 460 are about to tank in points...

p6811 PPD Estimates (Overclocked):

GTS450 - 7000 PPD
GTX460 - 9400 PPD
GTX470 - 14K PPD
GTX480 - 14.5K PPD ** stock clocks

Yeah I got some Project: 6800 WU's today... These look much tougher to run and are only 1298 points each. They are taking me 121 seconds per step. So I am able to do 714 steps per day or 7 WU's a day... My estimates show my GTS450 dropping from ~15,600 PPD to ~9,086 PPD if all we get are project 6800's for a bit. Not sure how you got you 7,000 PPD estimate, but that looks way low from what I am getting in results.

7k stock seems semi-accurate

makes my GPU run way hotter too (50C load instead of 44C)

so the newer units actually favor more shaders, good for the 460 owners, bad for the new 450 owners
