I'm using avast at the mo and that doesn't chew though my RAM and it have a gaming mode. Only thing is that you have to go into task manager (or process explorer, if you have this) and shut it down that way, but I think that most anti-virus programs are like that nowadays.

I've had pretty good success with AVG, but ultimately, I think it comes down to what your browsing and application habits are.
I actually went a whole year without anti-virus on one system of mine and never ran into any issues. Once I finally installed an AV, it didn't find anything, because it was used quite conservatively when browsing.
I know my brother uses Panda and he likes it quite a bit. It's hard to determine criteria for what a "good" AV is eh?

Well firstly one that doesn't work isn't good. But I think a lot of it is a matter of opinion rather than what they do.

Tried Norton for the free trial. It is very RAM hungry and bloated for the space on the HD.
Tried Mcafee for a year. It was better than Norton. In time it became bloatware on the HD space too.
AVG has been running now on the computers in the house for two years now. It has stopped a bunch of stuff trying to get through. Once there was an attack while I visited Wikipedia. It tried to slam the machine, the browser froze, but the AVG stopped it from loading and installing on the computer.
SpyBot is another item to have too. It works well with AVG.
